Changing the Default T-stance.

#1

When i first imported my character into MB i didn’t know to set his arms in a direct T-stance and i did a few animations. His arms are dropped a little not directly out. I figured it out after i made a few animations and i noticed they didn’t transfer well onto existing characters. Is there a way i can reset the initial pose of my character and maybe keep some of these animations?

yes you can, you can turn off the characterization and put his arms in to the right pose, re-characterize and you should be ok.

Wouldn’t this mess up the existing animations I have though?

Are you keyframing your animation to a control rig, or basing it on mocap data (actor)? If the latter, do as bclark said, then bind your new character back to the Actor.

If you’ve keyframed your sequence, then first of all I don’t really know why you’re experiencing offsets, but anyway, I doubt your existing animation frames will convert very well onto your new T-posed character.

If you want to try though, plot your animation onto the skeleton and save the fbx as something_old. Then de-characterize your character, modify your bind pose and re-characterize. Import in the something_old file and choose not merge, but to create new hierarchies. Create th selected take in one of your existing takes, and hit okay.

You should be able to make this imported character drive your T-posed character.

And if none of this makes any sense, it’s hopefully because I’m not on my MB workstation now and couldn’t verify this workflow. Alternatively, it’s too much (or too little) coffee.

Cheers

It will create an offset on your animations. If they are anims w/o prop interaction, etc. (ex. walk and run cycles), you should be able to correction them fairly quickly with addtive tracks or layers.

If you really have to (and you think it’ll be faster), you can try to mod the other characters default/tpose to match the other character. Should you want to use the anims for something else later on, you might regret this. Haha. However, if its a short project and you need to just get it done - it is an option.

I would take the time to just fix the first character the way Brad suggested, though. Prolly better to just tweak the anims and have the character set up properly from this point on.
