THE SCENE:

After shooting Professor Henry Jones(Sean Connery), Walter Donovan (Julian Glover) is tricked into drinking from a false Holy Grail. This leads to dire consequences.

HOW IT WAS DONE:

[b]The scene was done with combination of makeup effects, a motion control puppet and a variation of the computer morphing techniques pioneered by ILM for the movie Willow (1988) .

To perform the decomposition of Donovan, the motion control puppet was fitted with 3 heads in various stages of decomposition. In post production, with the morphing program, the sequence would be seamlessly blended, into one continuous shot.

#4

Can my entry be done completely in CG?

#5

Yes, BUT:
[ul]
[li]It has to be photoreal (unless it is an Anime entry)[/li][li]It has to be based on an effect used on any of the films/tv shows on the supplied list. (But a movie might be added to the list, if a good argument is made for it)[/li][/ul]-R

#6

Describe please more in detail which exactly scenes from these movies you mean. There are many scenes of disintegration in 291 episodes of Dragon Ball Z  . We are free to replicate ANY of them? And I have some doubt about X-Men 3 and Terminator 2.

#7

T2: Playground Nuclear explosion dream sequence.
Sarah Connor and the kids in the playground dissolve in a horrible nuclear nightmare

X3: The Phoenix Power. The scene happens towards the end of the film in Alcatraz.
Right before she gets impaled by wolverine, Phoenix starts expressing her power and she dissolves in a couple of soldiers and some mutants for good measure.

DBZ: Any shot where a character dissolves on screen.

great work on the compilation of the effects Roberto!

Just an addition – even though it’s not out yet you can see a lot of it in the trailers, Spiderman3 is going to have crapload of disintegration effects for Sandman.

#12

i´d love to join IF my deadlines ahead aren´t too tight. it´s such a pitty that deko-LT has no time at all atm :frowning:

solitude? keen on some teamplay?

#13

I see how it is… I’m second choice. hehe…I’d love to, BUT I may already be doing it with some friends of mine here in town. I’ll def. keep you in mind though, since you could just about whoop anybody’s but with pflow!

#14

Based on the recommendations of a lot of members in this thread Roberto’s Bullhorn: LETS TALK (Disintegration Mini challenge) , I am going to make some significant changes to the challenge. Not only that, I am planning to change the dateline.

So check that threads to see some of the ideas we are cooking for the challenge and the forum.

#15

you´re definetly NOT second choice! so many talented artists around here!!! i just talked with deko about taking part long ago, that´s all  not much of a substance behind talking to you after talking to deko  hope you´re still interested tho

main prob would be my timetable :frowning: but if there´s a will there´s a way

and thanks for the props…i don´t see me as such a butt rocker.i have fun creating flows thats all

kind regards

anselm

#16

haha… i was just kidding. I hear ya though, time is always an issue for everybody. Since i have a class (kind of) that I’ll hopefully be able to do this for, then I’ll participate, but if not, then there’s no way I’ll have time for it.

hehe… you are a butt rocker!

#17

I felt this image captured the Blade effect quite well (you all may already know this image), I just wanted to add this for anyone who has not seen it. IMO it explains the technique used, even if it is only a still.

#18

wow this subject reminds me my last fxwars close encounters in which i did “disintegration” effect for alien’s burning shot. I also got an idea for this challange. if i will get the time, i will be in for this one.and also got a digi cam, so it will be fun. gr8 idea roberto and gr8 work on compilation of all examples.

#19

As I’m going to be basing my entry on Mars Attacks (great movie btw, watched again at the weekend) and I did a bit of research. All images and video ©1996 Warner Brothers

Looking forward to posting up my work in progress soon!

For those without access to Xmen 3, here’s a short clip from the VFX awards, showing some disintegration elements towards the end:
