CgTalk:FXWars! Catapult! (Trebuchet) Challenge VOTE!:1

I also like CoreyC in all three catts. Snuck-up on Derby pretty good. The overall animation is very clean, nice work.

#62

my three votes are with CoreyC. clean, focused effective demonstration of lw8 dynamics.

As for CoryC, I like the camera shot, but when it hits the castle; it’s as if nothing is simulated at all. The ball dissappears into the bricks, and they blow out in the opposite direction. I understand how this kind of procedural simulation can’t really happen in Lightwave (no physical rotation based on collision), but still.

I am a stickler for procedural stuff, and I think that Derby’s animation also violates the rules as I wanted to interpret them, as the characters are keyed, etc…

I feel like these guys should have had to submit their scene files.

Great contest though.

Everything is simulated with LW dynamics. Also read back through the rules. Only the dynamics of the weapon and the brick wall had to be simulated. Keying was perfectly allowed in Debry’s keying of the men. In the real world a Trebuchet shot to a castle could not break through the wall at all but since part of the contest was to break a wall, that is what I did. Yes it is on the Hollywood side but it is still all dynamically calculated. I took great care, as I am sure Derby did as well, to not break the rules as we know them. Please don’t insinuate otherwise.

I’m not insinuating that you broke any rules, I am making a statement. I said that the bricks exploding were not a simulation of an impact of the ball hitting the wall. Sure, you can procedurally tell the wall to randomly explode when the ball gets within n units of it, but this is a simulation of a wall exploding, and not a ball hitting a wall. I merely said that the ball passes cleanly through the wall and all the bricks, therefore not simulating any collision; moreover that Lightwave’s month old rigid body system isn’t even capable of the physics that would make that possible. You can be defensive, but I didn’t say you didn’t animate the entire thing procedurally. I actually think you did a great job, as someone who used LW for 6 years, when it comes down to it, using Lightwave professionally becomes figuring out a way to fake the real effect you want (which is usually a feature another program has: flawlessly).

Also, I said ‘the rules as I wanted to interpret them’ in case you missed that part. I know you can add whatever keyed animation you want. I guess I was just wishing for a nice houdini entry

I have to give special mention to Derby-Q Salano, for how fast it took him to finish his simulation, however, he got lost into far from secondary stuff, and forgot about the tower destruction. Could have been Number One for me.

Very nice of you ORberto to put up that challenge!

Take Care guys!

Xavier.

“moreover that Lightwave’s month old rigid body system isn’t even capable of the physics that would make that possible”

This is a VERY incorrect statement.

I think CoryC responded clearly and respectfully to your opinion of his work. Other peaces added dust coming off there wall other had two balls hit there wall. I don’t think opinions of these peaces is a bad things but I’d tread lightly on whats sounds like discrediting there work or interpritation of the rules. It is also probable better suited to the threads of the peace itself for this is a thread for voting primarily.

I don’t want my post to continue this tread in the wrong direction so if you dissagree with my opinion please feel free to msg me privatly.
