These are my first matte paintings. I produced the daytime image first and just for practice I did a sunset version which I personally think works better. Any crits are welcome.

Nice

My only critique would be that this is too close to a classic painting style, which isn’t a bad thing, just gone too far in that direction for a matte painting. Also not too sure about the light bleed over the left side, think would be better without.

Thats insightful comment. I think that the classic painting feel is mainly due to an over use on that brush tool! I guess its just too addictive to use at the moment. Also it has a slight blur to the whole image. Will work on that.

I checked out your website. Very cool. I really like 3001 AD; very atmospheric.

Thanks for your tip

I would agree with dave on this one, the sunset one has the feel of a Constable (not a bad thing). I think to get a more real look you just need to avoid the temptation to make things too soft when blending, as that will give it a painterly feel, unless that is what you are going for.

Specifically in this one i think it could do with some more background hills/mountains to give some depth and avoid that ‘edge of the world’ effect that can crop sometimes when there’s little behind a foreground/midground object, as is happening at the sides a little in your image.

Overall great though, good composition and colours, keep it up

I agree with other two posters, oh by the way welcome to the forum.

I really like the last one as it is a warm image and does feel like a old master.

Thanks for sharing

Look forward to more of your work
