Castlehlia

this is my latest personal matte painting, since I first saw budapest’s parlament the idea came out instantly, what a great building with a great potential matte painting to be, and here’s what I got, I did a dolly in camera projection animation that will show just a slight movement but will give some life to the still image, painting done in photoshop, animation 3ds max and after effects

here’s a simple camera projection mov 35mb ( sorry for the low quality )

Lovely work Jaime! Great to see new work from you! I love the muted colour pallette. The animation is really strong too. How did you do the FG trees / bushes? It looks like a 3D solution from the breakdown? Can you say a little about how you did that?

Cheers!

Nick

hey Nick , thanks for the comments, well I did the animation and camera projection in 3ds max, the bushes and trees are 3D models , I have multiple projection textures for this one, foreground, the ruins foreground as well , the hill with the round architecture, the main castle , the mountains just behind it and the backdrop sky and far mountains, I used simple camera projection modifier to it, I did not need the camera per pixel map cause everything was just a simple planar projection from the camera view, later I have fog cards textured on planes and I animated a little bit some of their vertices with soft selection just to simulate movement

Nice one James. I’ve seen alot of mattes with that building but only a few that work, ha ha…i’m sure you know what I mean. One suggestion for the animation, I would do smoe soft selection/point level animation on the sphere that has ur sky projected. You can get some nice movement in the clouds. Thats what I did on a few of mine and it works great.

Looks cool! Great mixing of 2D and 3D. I wish one day i can paint as good matte!

Hey Jaime,

Nice cinematic piece. strong composition and good lighting. Minor critique been the harsh shadows in the foreground element, but not very noticable in the animation. Cool mist too

Don’t leave it too long before we see more work

Best,
Dave.

Wow, i’ve seen it in Budapest and was wonderful…but here, ehi, is really amazing.
Congratulations Mike!

thanks guys ! I appreciate your kind comments, and yeah I thought about the clouds moving a bit ,but well after the render was done lol, it’s hard to work in personal stuff when you’re so busy but I already have my next personal project in mind, and will start working on it next week

Glad to hear it! Look forward to seeing that one too!

Me too:)

james: Why did not post this matte to the gallery?

very nice angle and design overall!

however a few crits:

  1. i think you overused the mist, you can probably reveal more detailing in the landscape instead.
  2. the colors are are making the painting look dull
  3. allthough you suggest strong directional light on the structure we dont see much of this strong light indicated enough in the clouds, sky and terrain
  4. watch out for too strong silhuettes on the far left bottom corner, silhuettes tend to have a certain cut out feel if it looks too sharp against a backlit layer.

cheers mate, hope you dont mind my 2 cents, pitching in to help

James,

Very nice mood and comp (love the detail and design of the background buildings) , only crit is the foreground building doesn’t seem to have the same parallax as the rest of the comp(looks tilted forward towards the camera about 8-12 degrees), and since most of the buildings have a very strong vertical silhouette, it’s a little distracting. I would also toss in a very small lightwrap on the plates to help them “kiss the plate” a little more. I know you got that cloudy, diffuse lighting going but a little more wrap would sell to me. Other than that… great work man.

Cheers :applause:
