Capturing "grain map" from footage.....

#1

Hello!

Few weeks ago I watched a AE tutorial where the tutor composited some CG objects into the scene. At the end he “captured a grain map” from the original footage and put it on adjustment layer with somekind of transfer mode.

Since I watched too many tutorials in past weeks (just ask my GF :)) I can not remember where I saw this tutorial. I did not put it into my bookmarks.

Can someone explain the method of capturing the grain and overlaying it on CG objects or maybe by any chance post URL to that tutorial?

Thank you for your answers and take care!

Effect --> Noise and Grain --> Match Grain

Just make sure to base the source on a “neutral” area with even light distribution. Beyond that there’s certainly a million ways to match visually (which is my preferred method). Blending modes should not be necessary if you use Add Grain, but if you create your noise with other effects, you will want to go with Overlay or Multiply, on rare occasions with Add and Screen.

That is exactly IT! Yesterday I remembered where I saw the tutorial. It was Object Tracking with Syntheyes Part 7: Compositing with After Effects by Christopher Montesano at Cineversity. He used the same method. I read that add grain can be pretty slow on render.

Thank you and bye!

BTW:
I saw your Mograph tutorials at Creativecow. Is it possible to see more of your C4D tuts somewhere on the web?
