Can't get ReelSmart Motion Blur to work from 3ds max.

#1

Hello, I’m having trouble gtting the motion blur to work The blur keeps coming out slanted. Can someone tell me what I’m doing wrong. I use the video tutorial from cgpov.com but its not coming out for me. I just the company’s FAQs too. the files are attached. You’ll have to render out a frame.

Max 2010 and AE CS4

Which makes the whole exercise pointless on your part, considering that for simple statistical reasons 80% of the users here may not use MAX… Provide a rendered file yourself and someone may take a look.

well sorry I render out the entire animation but it wa too big to post thats why I didn’t include. Here is one frame. The animation is just a ball moving up and down.

I’ll have a look at it when I’m back at home in the evening… Thanks for providing the file.

I’m afraid this is inconclusive. The two obvious mistakes you made: a) you did not add a neutral midpoint solid for the vectors and b) you applied it to an adjustment layer. you also did not pre-compose the RGB foreground and background layers. Still, even when fixing these issues, it whacks out, so the problem is probably incorrect render settings in MAX. The behavior suggests issues with the whitepoint of the vector pass or the motion scale, respectively…

I have no idea what that means, lol. Thanks for your help. Do you know any online tutorials that show the correct way of setting everything up in max? I tried CGPOV but it doesn’t work.

The whole procedure is pretty clear at the AE end:

  • don’t use RSMB on an adjustment layer
  • add a solid with neutral R/G (128/128/0) in the vector pass to tell the effect which pixels are actually fixed (black/ empty Alpha is not usable, it’s simply “undefined”)
  • pre-compose any foreground and background items before applying the plug-in to get correct blending

I’m sure you can the proper answers for MAX on a MAX-centric forum. just take care that the vector pass comes out linear…
