cant figure out new software
there are blender tutorials out/about on the web. blender seems to be directed at expert users, as they don’t really expose their features in a conventional manner (my opinion). you might try maya personal learning edition. it’s a hefty download, but the documentation is very good.
Softimage also has an educational verision of XSI. I’ve tried both Maya PLE and the XSI one. XSI is less limiting and the watermark isn’t as obtrusive, but XSI can be difficult for beginners to grasp (I gave up). Maya on the otherhand is a little easier to use, but the limitations will nag you in the end.
Blender does have full documentations to demonstrate all the features, in addition to the tutorials. There’s a PDF out there, perhaps you can Google search it… oh fine, here ya go:

yes, in fact the book is now fully reachable for free on the website. look for documentation and the 2.3 guide
Galdon…galdon…did you post this similar thread over at gamedev.net? Oh well…
Yeah, download the docs. To start with - focus only on learning to navigate the view-port and the like. Leave modelling, texturing, animation etc until you know how to manipulate the view-port. One step at a time and you’ll continuely grow… ![]()
