Using Meshmooth? If yes, use smoothing groups, or even easier, check “Smooth by Material-ID” in the meshsmooth rollout…

Don’t use multi-sub object or vertex paint. Use a composite map. For the top map use a mask that’s blured, for blending the edges into the map underneath.

or a Blend map would be simpler. you’ll need same blurred mask that blends between 2 materials.
