Can I paint scatter density on Mash distribute on mesh?

I see I can control scale rotate and translate with a texture map. But I would like to simply REMOVE distributed instances via a texture.

Ways to do this?

I can sort of scale objects to zero and make them go away but that seems like a bad idea…

You can use a visibility node. I believe you can paint the strength of that also
