Can I knock out Multiple Layers using Black Shape?

#1

I Only have Photoshop CS. I now time to upgrade. What I want to know is there some way to paint a black shape on a layer, then have this shape “knock” out all of the layers below it so everything beneath the black shape is now transparent?

If you want to mask more than one layer, you’d have to group the layers you want to mask and assign a mask layer to this group. But I’m quite sure this was not available in CS, I think it was introduced with CS1 or 2.

Thanks pokoy.

I forget what it’s called but the bit where you hold alt down and click between two layers should do the job.

Gruhn is correct - however, it works exactly the other way than you would expect.

To describe the process by text is rather tedious, so here’s a link to a stupid wink-based video tutorial I made a long time ago for a basic PH class of mine:

http://uploading.com/files/55ed48f1/clipping%2Bmask%2B%26%2Beffects.zip/

Unzip and start the html file.

Obviously, the same clipping effect could be made using layer and vector masks as well.
