Can anyone help me with a mudbox painting problem painting artifacts

I have unwrapped my model using uvlayout and sent it back to 3ds max. Then I exported to FBX. Then I imported the model into mudbox. For some strange reason when I paint on to the model squares start showing up in other areas. Now this whole side is one uv island so the problem isn’t that the uvs are too close together. I am wondering if anyone else had this problem, and how to solve it. I obviously spaced my uv islands apart. It doesn’t do this on all parts of the model though, just some areas.

I am using a Wacom Cintiq, but I suppose that shouldn’t make a difference.
Luckily on this model I got round it by painting over the squares and the texture didn’t have to be so accurate, but I would really like to know what is causing this issue.
