Can someone plz tell me how to create bump maps and specular in photohop for 3ds max.
Usually to create bump maps i just take the texture and change it to black and white, will that work ? and do just inverting the map will work as a specular map?

Most rendering programs today can use a color photo of an object’s surface texture as a bump map. The dark colors will appear deeper in the rendered object. You scene’s lighting will highlight the bump generated at render time.
Spec maps are used to add shine to an object when generating the shine at render time can become too slow. You would slip in the spec map and not use the renderer’s spec value setting. Some renderers can bake any spec lighting found on an object to a spec map, which can be used as a spec map for further renders.
The disadvantage being that spec maps need to be updated when the light source in your scene is moved.
Download a trial version of CrazyBump to get an idea of how manipulating photos is not the best way to get spec maps.

Wrong attempt. Might work in some cases, but just because it’s comfortable it doesn’t mean it’s right.
It would work on a brick wall but will absolutely fail on something with a checker patterned surface color.
