BUG TESTERS NEEDED - for prelaunch

#1

Hey all, for those of you who have the time or the inclination (dun be shy!) I’m relaunching a site that’s been dormant for some time. The site itself is built with Flash MX, and since I’m the only one who’s really been able to test it, I most likely have not caught half the bugs that are still lurking around. Here’s the link: XYGOXEN .

The content is all temporary and will be updated tonight for this prelaunch. However please feel free to go through the site, and if you find anything questionable or buggy contact me at: sprat@dowco.com Please include “XYGOXEN BUG REPORT” in your subject lines. There’s a contact section in the main nav that you can use as well.

I’m also looking for a pool of people to beta test some software for news postings. If you’re interested please contact me via the same address, and mod your subject line to say “XYGOXEN BETA TESTER”. Thanks for all the [future] help ppl!

thats a lovely site. everything seems to work fine, but i did get small boxes appearing saying, SPLASH frame 1 etc… but i guess u may know that.

I’m not to sure about the flashyness of it, like the buttons and such, maybe it needs calmed down. BUT dammit , its cooler than my new site…

Great work! I love the whole concept. I did find a couple of bugs though. In the Newswire section, there are links to google in the blank empty space. The second one is that you can click on the links through your sections. For instance, if I open up your about page, I can still click on the Newswire links through it.

Ahh!, just as I was about to reply I figured out what was going on: when the menu-buttons are clicked, a thing appears floating on top of the news-screen. I had no idea that was what was happening… not the least because the interface in the background remains active. It gets grayed out, that’s nice, but it remains active just the same as far as I can tell.

It looks like a fairly complex site, ready to form an active community and such… very nice. I dug the preloading sequence, seems to indicate a solid loading-scheme running behind the scenes.

And as for the flashing, it’s certainly not the least flashing site I’ve ever seen, but… idunno… I like it. I see it as a style-thing. It seems to do the massive flashing consistently, so I’m not complaining.

Sorry I couldn’t find any specific bugs. I came away a little… confused from the whole experience.

hey! this is really a wonderful work… ok the design is very nice, but i especially mean the incredible ActionScript work… to make a whole portal with flash is an incredible work and u did it perfectly, top-usability and top-design for me!

…but u asked for bugs… and i give u one…

when u open a detail box and you scroll down the text to half or to the end… then u close the box, the next box u will open will have text already scrolled to the position u left the scrollbar in the previous one.

You need to reinitialize the scrollbar to initial position everytime that you close a box (or u open a new one)…

this doesn’t happen when u close the box than open another one with no scrollbar and than a new one again (opening the one with no scrollbar reinitialize it)

hope it can be useful

Awesome site!! looks very promising.

I’m on 56K so… it hurt… :frowning: The most annoying thing was that the downlaod seemed to timeout. I had to refresh to get it to continue. 3 times!

A design issue I found with the close button on a section is that its very hard to read. Its black and blurred and took me too long (a couple more seconds than it should) to find it.

There is also the issue with the scrollbar as pointed out earlier.

I would like to be able to click on an image, not just the text box.

Although the design, specifically the colours, aren’t my cup of tea…I found myself intruiged, and sucked into the content immediately. I can’t wait for more! I read everything. Great to see such exciting and interesting content! I loved it.

Thanks for the great comments ppl, One of these days I will post one of the section as open source for ppl do download and use. Most specifically the news section which is actually a stand alone application. Anyways about the long download times, we have been working very hard lately to optimize the site and we’ve come very close to brining the overall download time to a little over 50%. Of course, since this site is a portal and rather big, it will be a longer download than most. However, we’ve taken it’s initial size fom 400kb + to something just a little over 200kb the rest of the sections are being optimized as we go along. Content images are being tweaked with a little to get the best quality & compression levels. Stay tuned for more updates. Oh and if any one is interested, please check out the site, we’re accepting news contributors- details available in the news section.

Cheers!

WOW,

That’s very generous of you! I will most definitely keep an eye out for the source code that you release! Keep up the awesome work.

I have been dreaming about a flash portal site and I am glad you are coming up with one. That must take so much time that I could not believe.

If you gave out an open source… I would be speechless…

Great site and I like the idea… The intro with the flashing white in the sections… hmm could be toned down a little… glad I didn’t get a siezure.

Very nice and good luck
