Brushes become Opaque while painting.

#1

So, while I’m painting rapid strokes in CS4 my brush will lose its transparency that has been set to pen pressure. It seems to happen completely at random and is pretty irritating.

I think this could be a Wacom issue but not 100% sure.

I’ve tried uninstalling my wacom drivers and have installed the latest drivers from the wacom site. I’ve also tried resetting PS preferences. No joy.

Here’s an image to illustrate what is happening.

Any ideas?

i just did a test and you’re right
…although i had to shift + paint VERY fast to achieve this result

also i think it happens only when you press a bit harder…which is almost understandable

This may be a stupid question, but are you sure you’re not actually pressing a bit harder when painting faster? Generally I find myself doing that, especially with longer lines.

i checked this again several times and it actually happens quite often when shift is held down. even without pressing harder

I have windows 7, photoshop CS4 x64, and a wacom intuos (PTZ) tablet and i get the same or very similar issue, and it’s killing me. (pen is set to ‘mouse’ mode)

I set both brush size and opacity to pen pressure, and normally it works fine, but occasionally a stroke comes out at full size and opacity, when i am barely pressing down at all (I’ll often paint with very many rapid, light strokes, but it happens with infrequent strokes as well.)

I’ve had the issue on a windows XP box too, with a smaller, older Wacom.

It makes it incredibly frustrating to paint, as i have to stop and undo every 8th or so stroke.

Any clues to what is causing this would be greatly appreciated.

I have seen this issue too over the last few versions of Photoshop (all CS versions) Also using several different Wacom tablets. Usually I need to reboot Photoshop to fix the issue.

One thing I have found to reduce it from happening is to let Photoshop load completely without clicking on anything else. (I usually have a web browser open and will browse while waiting for a program to load)

i have had this problem happen on different machines here. It seems to happen most often on a Hackintosh. Restarting photoshop gets the problem to go away. It seems to happen when there is a stressed processor that is unable to deal with the load it is being asked to carry. Reducing background applications such as safari running a web page that has a flash ad in it seems to reduce the likely hood of this problem occurring.

Cheers Protoscape - I think you are right - after trying every suggested fix it just seems to be a performance issue that I will have to live with.

I wanted to post a reply here because I have experienced, and resolved, the problem outlined in this thread. In my case occurances began when I installed Photoshop CS4 and seemed to be triggered when I attempted to draw very lightly on my wacom tablet. Every few strokes the tablet seemed to lose pressure sensitivity and draw a line at full force.

Specs:
Winxp
Intuos3

I toyed with a few of my settings first. I noticed that when I lowered the threshold the problem would occur more frequently. Intensive google searching turned up only a few suggestions, one of which was to make sure the pen was set to “data” mode instead of “standard.” Although my settings were already “Data,” I mention this for sake of completeness. Next, I uninstalled my wacom drivers completely, then reinstalled the current drivers. I have not experienced the problem again since.

OP, I know you already reinstalled your drivers, but consider changing the sensitivity threshold a bit to see if it makes any difference. When I lowered it enough originally it exacerbated the number of occurances. Raising the threshold may do the opposite.
