bone roll from matrix

Hi folks,

I’d like to write a more robust operator for orienting bones. Thing is, I’m not sure how to go from a calculated matrix to Blender’s head / tail / roll. If I have a matrix with proper rotation vectors already plugged in, could anyone tell me the math needed to extract a roll value from that?

I can’t help you directly, but there’s a script written by Bassam Kurdali called ‘rigamarule’, it may have the functionality or give you an idea of what you’re looking for:
