Saku_Seraph, here’s what I mean by Crow’s Feet (in red), and the topology that’s needed around there. This is just a sketch, still issues to resolve, but you get the idea. The upper lid overlaps the lower a tiny bit when shut or squinting, at least on people above 30 or so. (Like me.)
Is that your base mesh? that’s probably causeing the bulk of your problems, it’s been said here before, but a light weight mesh is easier to smooth out.
I’m not sure how easy it is in maya (i’m a max bunny) but I’d either leave that mesh as is, and start from scratch (you can use this mesh as a template of form). Or manually reduce polygons.
also, just at a glance, are you sure of the size of that head? it looks a little large to me
Oh BTW mr stahlberg, any chance at a hair tutorial soon? i think that hair texture of yours is absolutely delicious, some tips would be awesome! :applause:
If i may add …if u don’t make Crow’s Feet u will find out (like i did … ) the hard way that it is mostly needed in very strong exprssion where eyes and their area plays a crucial role.
Although i don’t know if u can make it in very young characters…has anyone tried this?
Yeah, I know the mesh is nasty…yuck! hahah unfortunately due to my project deadline i wont be able to start over now. ill just have to do a new model once i graduate…(bout a month and half…pretty sad that this is where im at in my schooling…anyways thats another story)
Im using maya. You suggested using it as a template or form. hwat do you suggest? I may be able to reduce the polys manually after i get that seam out of there. you’re right the head is a tad bit big.
Trust me it can’t be worse than where I am, 1 year of 3D and we can make a ball bounce. (sigh)
What I meant by template, is use your original model instead of your reference planes, lock it or freeze it or what ever it is you do in maya, and create a new model, using the old one to copy the form off. Don’t match it vert for vert of course, just make sure it all fits nicely.
thanks for the help. Ill try that next time around. well…here goes… i think i can beat u.
Sadly ive learned, nothing at my school. The teacher tries to demostrate things, but half the time cant explain why things dont work in a demo, only saying “it was working before…hmmmm” and he takes 30 mins trying to figure it out. Granted he is the director of the art department, so he’s a busy guy, but im paying too much money to learn on my own. ive learned more in 3 months on my own then in 3 years at ASU. On top of that they want us to produce, great works of art using CG. But in every other department to do that they teach you the fundamentals. You know what…ASU should have a class that teaches you how to skip the fundamentals…I would have gotten an A thanks to my AWESOME instructor…(sarcasim)…in any case i graduate in a month and half, so over the next 6-12 months i really wanna hammer out some nice portfolio stuff to atleast get my foot in the door with a job and go from there.
thats the plan anyways.
ill keep ya guys posted on my progress, cuz ive been learning more from u all then ill ever learn at ASU.
Thought I could contribute to this great thread. Although I really like this idea of using 5 sided poly’s liberally, I still think it’s beneficial to be able to create a mainly quad figure with optimized polys that is quite realistic. This is an athletic female I created recently and I think I’ve captured a lot of detail with a fairly light mesh.
I’ve rebuilt major areas of this model from scratch, still can’t figure out the butt tho, any pointers? (there is a link to my model’s thread in my sig)
Well I got some time to “re wire” the stuff.
the face is still in halves so alot will change when I weld them together.
I also noticed that the ears need some work, and the nose needs some adjustments.
here it is anyway (maybe there is something that I don´t see, cause I´m sculpting this with no refs. for those who dont know).
Crit away
