Bobby Chiu's Subway Sketch Groups!

It is my fault to be lack of momentum.
I have been agresively busy in the past two months, but I promised I will do a zoo visit soon.

Wow, it is really strange seeing so many discouraged people in here. Edmonton is a small city but we’ve had lots of sucsess. You have to be a bit agressive (which isn’t really my style but you have to do what you have to do I guess), I email my old college profs who tell students, I also email my local childrens illustration group, old clubs I used to be involved in (and no, they weren’t “art” clubs either), and looked up all the people on CGtalk that are from Edmonton and PM’d them. I’m going to eventually get a website up as well (first I’m working on my own… heh heh) and will make hand-outs for my members. I’m at the point where a comfortable group comes every time (usually just the four of us) which I find a nice size to blend into crowds with. I’ve gone to the zoo, malls, the LRT, a pub, park… all good places. I just recently took everyone to a figure drawing session which was a big hit too. We are going a bit out of our realm next week and are going to try sculpture (that should be cool). We don’t have a set day of the week, which is hard for some people but also makes it easier for others to stop by everyonce and a while.

Keep trying guys and even if you end up sketching alone just think how much easier it will be to blend into any crowd! No more sour looks… or maybe there will be? ha ha! If you are out there thinking of starting a group, don’t shy away. It’s well well worth it. Go for it, be prepared for a bit of “grunt work” but also more fun than you’ll expect. Go where the fun is.

Here’s my last sketches from figure drawing: warning: nudity.

Hey any one out there in Vegas want to start a sketch group??

#124

I read birdybear’s post and I gotta say, I’m really glad to have “met” so many people on here who’ve been so supportive of me, my work, and my ideas.

As for the Subway Sketching Groups, I think anyone who wants to start one must do so for the love of art. If you wanna do one to become influential or popular or whatever, this is not the thing for you. Cuz if you start something that costs nothing and has no obligation for anyone to join, you really must be prepared to go alone a lot of the time cuz people won’t feel the urgency to attend right off the bat. The Toronto group wasn’t always strong, just as I’m sure birdybear’s Edmonton group didn’t happen overnight. But as the cliche goes, if you build it, they will come. But don’t “build it” for the sole purpose of having people come join you. Art is a field and industry based on passion. If you have passion, people will naturally gravitate towards you. If you publicize your group, one person will join you eventually. If you can infect them with your passion, they’ll get sucked in and bring someone else. And another, and another, until like birdybear or our Toronto group, you build a core group of people who are present every week.

If you start your own group (and considering how little is involved in just STARTING a group, anybody anywhere can do it), you’re building your discipline to benefit yourself and your work first. Develop good art habits, lead by example, and be the first to leap in.

(I’ve found that being forced to coordinate strangers every week has also really helped me with my networking and presentation skills, both important skills to have for work, which no one is gonna teach you in school.)

Anyway, I didn’t mean to write this much. Basically, I just wanted to say that, there’s no Subway Sketch Group that’s too small, as long as there’s a Group.

Cheers,
Bobby.

As long as you get out there, you’ve got momentum !
So - um - keep on “rockin”.

Birdybear has some good ideas on recruitment

Hey, everybody. Back from Baltimore. Sorry I didn’t get to meet up with you, Rebecca. Didn’t have much time at all for anything(The wife and I went to a wedding).

I’ve always been sketching where ever I’ve gone and this past trip was no exception. I did a lot of sketching at Burbank Int’l, DFW, BWI and around Baltimore in general. We had really long days during travel days due to layovers and such, so we were traveling for about 10 hours a day…ugh. :argh:

Time to fly Jet Blue the next time.

Here are some images:

I also do a lot of sketching at the 3rd St. Promenade, so if a group wants to meet up, email me and let me know and I’ll try to make it down there!
