Bobby Chiu's Subway Sketch Groups!

#101

Ok… i liked this one because it actually looks like the guy (likeness is probably my most distinct weakness). Hopefully I will be able to post some from some more members down the road (not enough time at this moment to get them)

PS: I’ve had seven people in my group as the “biggest gathering” and one guy did get out and moved to another car half way through. When you spread out during the session, moving cars then meet up after for a crit of sorts works well. In the food court we constantly move tables into the biggest crowds.

Anyone from VIENNA interested in starting a sketch group???
(if so, send me a PM please!)

Starting one up in Singapore this weekend, since I’m back. I’ll be going alone if nobody else bites, but that’s okay, too… :stuck_out_tongue:

#104

Aw, man, you mean we gotta trek all the way to SINGAPORE to sketch with the Teckers? Does the metro go that far?

Are there any…Orientals? :scream: <inside joke! inside joke!>

Cheers Teckie!

Hey Roberto,

I’m starting up a Detroit sketch group. There is no major mass transit here (it’s automobile central, after all), so I thought we could meet at shopping malls. Bob’s Toronto group was a great experience, really helped me work on my caricature skills. I hope some SE Michigan sketch fanatics show up. I know they are out there.

#109

I have been going to the malls in Ottawa - tons of interesting people - esp. the food courts. Now if I can only find some other people to join me.:hmm:

cheers,
Gord

Anyone interested in a Los Angeles Sketch Group, maybe on the red line (As it doesn’t get crowded like the light rail does) or perhaps on Metrolink? If not that, meetings could be at local malls, like the Santa Monica Promenade…

So, any around my area who might want to try this?

#111

I hope you can organize a cool LA group.
As soon as you get something up, send me a PM and ill add you to the main list of groups.

I just realized that there is no German sketchgroup… so who wants to join me and create a sketchgroup in the Ruhr Basin? Since Bochum doesn`t have one suitable subway it would be Dortmund or Essen or maybe some of the S Bahnen.

If anyone is interested please contact me via pm or email!

#114

Not that I expected anyone to attend… but it is official I was the only person at The philadelphia pa/nj subway skecth group meeting today. Thats okay though, because I had time to do some skecthes and not have my little girl allways pulling at my paper. It was fun… now I just have to get more people to join. maybe some flyers at the local art schools will do the trick! hmmm

Shaun,

I’m sorry to hear that! If it makes you feel better, the DC group has about as much momentum as a rock…yep, I think folks have gotten together a grand total of 2 times, and I chickened out on both trips!! :scream: So, I think it behooves us all to move to Toronto where the REAL sketch groups are goin’ on.

Cheers!

In an attempt to entice more people in the area and at local colleges I have created a website (with forums) for my chapter . I am still in the prgress of cleaning it up, but is is functional. I will be doing some footwork in the next few days in hopes of recruiting people for what I think could be really flippin fun.

The site can be found here:

thanks,
Shaun

Hello everyone!

Already, it’s September. Time for new beginnings.

I just wanted to catch you guys up a little: I’ve launched my own new venture, Imaginism Studios, and one of our first projects is book of sketches and tutorials on digital painting, which we’re selling online and at shows. I’ve also included an entire section dedicated to subway sketching, just cuz sketching has always been a major part of the foundation on which I’ve built the rest of my art. I think it’s a good way to go in order to improve.
Anyway, now with my book completed, I expect to have a lot more time to check in with everybody.

I read over this thread starting at the beginning today and I’ve found myself reconnecting with the passion of my fellow artists. While I’m sure we all know that things won’t always go smoothly (whether with subway sketching or work or school or LIFE in general), it’s important not to get discouraged. (I felt quite inspired to see Shaun’s can-do spirit, putting forth so much additional effort after NJ/PA’s one low turnout instead of giving up!)

Personally, despite the long hours lately and all the hard work I’ve put into getting my studio off the ground, I’d still managed to stick with our weekly subway sketching group just cuz it’s relaxing and simple. How much more pure can art get beyond a pencil and a piece of paper, right?

So don’t be concerned about the turn out, wherever your group might be. If you sketch alone, you are a dedicated artist; if you are a group of two… well, a “group” starts at two! The point isn’t to overrun the subway anyway; the point is to become a better artist! And all good artists have discipline and good art habits.

So I hope everybody will keep sketching, keep drawing, keep working at your craft whether it’s at a mall, in your college or work cafeteria, or on the subway. (Personally, I like sketching on the subway cuz of the broad cross-section of society that takes transit. I can see life from so many different angles just by riding the subway.)

Thanks Roberto and everyone else for keeping this thread going! I’m looking forward to seeing everybody’s work!

Cheers,
Bobby.
