Bmrt???

Does anyone know what’s happened to bmrt? (www.bmrt.org)

Is it no longer available?

Regards

Andy

Sadly, no.

From the renderman FAQ:
BMRT is no longer distributed, as part of the settlement of the lawsuits Pixar filed against Exluna and Entropy/BMRT’s authors.

If you are looking for a free renderman raytracer, you can now use Pixie, lucille and, for non-commercial purposes, 3delight. Matt Pharr also offers pbrt as part of his book on how to write a raytracer. Other commercial renderman raytracers (Air, mainly) may also have demos you can use for limited time.
If you are looking just for a free raytracer and you don’t care for them to be renderman compliant, you have even more options, such as povray, yafray, radiance, winOSI, renderPark, virtuallight, rayshade, and probably many, many others I’ve never heard of.
From all those, povray is probably the one with the longest history and one of the most battle tested ones.
If you are looking for a renderer that comes integrated with a free modeling package, you might want to also check out Equinox3d (which feels like a combo of maya lite+softimage3d lite), a moray->povray combo or a blender->yafray combo.
Note that not all renderers work on all platforms, come with source code or are free to use for commercial purposes, so likely those could end up being your first factors in choosing your favorite tool.

Don’t forget http://www.aqsis.com/

Okay, thanks for the update

Of all the free renderers I’ve tried, 3Delight seemed most feature-complete and most like PRMan. Aqsis is pretty good, but has some bugs and is rather slow.

However none of these can really be compared in terms of stability or speed to the Real Deal (i.e. PRMan).

3Delight isn’t nearly as featureful as Pixie - for example, no photon mapping . OTOH, 3Delight appears to be faster than Pixie.

Nvidia has bought the rights and transformed it in Gelato
