Blender Renderfarm

#1

So I just started to get into Blender, learning it in hopes that I could use it as a suitable replacement to some of the bigger apps out there. While poking around various resources on the internet, I stumbled across this!

http://renderfarm.fi/

It’s a “cloud” volunteer render farm for Blender. It literally takes 5 minutes to set up and you can start volunteering your computer to be a part of the render farm. Since I’m new to Blender, I haven’t had a chance to submit anything to the system yet, however I can definitely say that knowing something like this exists, really gives me a lot of motivation to learn Blender and make something to submit!

Anyone else out there have any experience with it?

I was looking into these and from what i remember they were mainly for people who wanted to render animations, which i don’t do. Then there’s the problem of other people having access to your files which i personally wasn’t to keen on, however i did not research into what happens to the files after the render has finished.

Also another thing deterring me is that i would want to donate CPU power to help other people but i wouldn’t be of much help as it would take my laptop forever to render one frame let alone a significant number of frames. As well as my laptops poor management of heat.

I believe it is a bucket-distribution render setup, so it can be used to render single images faster than a single machine.

However, you make an excellent point. The system downloads the files locally to your own computer(s) to be rendered when on the system. While I don’t think it’s easily accomplished, it’s technically possible to steal the files if you were so inclined. I’m not sure if it the cache after the job is done or not. Additionally, the system automatically previews your project on their website. So anything that is sensitive or under an NDA would not be suitable for this.

It’s more of a system for projects that are more “open” and for individuals who are not overly concerned about someone stealing their work or seeing it earlier than the final release. Personally, that’s exactly how I feel about my projects, I have it on good faith that users of this service are not out to use it for nefarious purposes… but I understand your concerns.

Ahh. Think i may need to check this out if that’s the case.

TBH i’m not sure why i’m so worried about people stealing my work. It’s not like i have anything worth stealing yet.
