By sport bikes you mean r1 gsx etc? If so read up on poly modeling, and apply what you learn there to modeling the bike. Check out a couple of car modeling tutorials, and adapt the technique to bikes.

I am actually just finishing writing a poly tutorial on a Busa. It will be up on A Bunch of Short Guys, An animators guild in Dallas within a week.

Thanks man ! Appreciate the help. Could you tell me when you post that tutorial on your site ?? ThanX again !

I’m sorry but… that was one of the worst tutorials I’ve seen. It’s really more of a step-by-step display of your progress with captions. I think you should try to understand your audience better.

I’m also trying to learn how to model, and one of my goals is to do a motorcycle. I’ve already read about edgeloops and edgerings, but I still don’t know how to apply them, or find the tools for them.
I noticed a picture with series of selected edges and the text “Grab this edge with a loop”. Now how would I know what that means if I didn’t know about edgeloops? I still don’t know how to select loops or rings. They were apparantly included since Max5. I have Max6 and I can’t find it.

edit: well I stumbled upon the answer finally. Turns out I was using mesh instead of poly. Who knew! I sure didn’t. sigh
“edgeloop” isn’t even in Max help.

I apologize for the way the tutorial is writen, it is my first. What I mean by loop or ring is, that there is a button in the Selection part of the tool panel called loop. Even though this is my 1st tut please feel free to tell me what would be helpful in writting another.

Those kind of comments are really uncalled for. Rob was nice enough to sacrifice “his” time and create something with good intentions. Next time, use a little tact and consideration.

Agree with powerwave3d the comments are uncalled for.
Rob I was able to follow along being familiar with the proggy. Maybe a little more description of what you are doing technically would help people less familiar with some of the features/techniques.
Don’t be discouraged, keep at it!

Hi

It may not be exactly what your looking for but it’s the same priciples , if you head over to www.3d-palace.com, there is a video on modelling the bike from Akira… cannot remember if it’s in Cinema 4D but it’s very good, definately worth a look.

#11

Hey Jay,
I already have that tutorial thank you very much. And yeah … IT IS cinema 4D. The concept is very much the same at the beginning stages after a while, it gets wierd. lol :scream:
Thank you !!

Thanks for the input on how to make tut better. I’m not worried about critiques on how good or bad, there helpful. Gone through 5 years of crits in school.

#13

hi there. i was just wondering if the “akira bike” turorial (even if it is for c4d) is also transferable to 3dsmax (6)? i want to make this bike, too. but i am just a beginner in 3dsmax. i’m currently working through the max shipped tutorials.

#14

Cinema 4D and Max aren’t that different. They just differ in the interface and give or take a few extra tools. If you’re familiar with sub-division modelling in poly or mesh, you’ll see that they are both alike. for example in the first file _Akira01.avi, what he did was setup the scene, which i am sure you can too by creating a cube and applying the appropriate texture in the viewport. Then he began by creating a box, divided it into two and split one half so he could mirror or symmetry them once one part is completed and went into the vertex sub-d and started moulding the shape.

Its quite easy if you know the basics in max. Give it a try. Good Luck !

PS: I suggest you work on the max tutorials on modelling some more if you’re not sure about this ! Concentrate on sub-d modelling.

#15

thank you for your advise. i’ll continue the 3dsmax tuts today and after that i’ll try the lotus elise video tutorial. maybe after that i can transfer the technique from c4d to 3dsmax6.

one question aside that: i want to make a quake III arena model move in a certain way for a movie project. is this done by 3dsmax animation. do i have to use character studio? maybe you know a hint.

thx for the help so far
gl all with your projects

well … you never mentioned which extension your quake 3 file is in ?? If you need to animate a character, you probably need to rig it and obviously, you have to use character studio. I would be able to help if you were more specific !

I’ve been using the techniques described in LionTR’s wonderful boxmodelling tutorial to model my '04 Katana.

http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=180399

The biggest difference between modelling a bike and a car is that more little parts are visible. No chance of tinting the windows to avoid modelling the seat.

The other difficulty I’m finding is that there are more features hidden from view in the reference pictures that make it difficult to be accurate on body features. I’m lucky with my Katana model because I can always go measure up the real thing when I get stuck.

My advice to those looking for a tutorial on bike modelling is to just be creative. Every part may require a different creative method. If in doubt about specific parts ask specific questions and there is sure to be someone out there who will have some advice. Never create something the same way twice and you’re sure to learn something on the way.

My thanks again to LionTR who’s wonderful tutorial has inspired me.

sry for the offtopic here.

I couldn’t agree more. you cant lie a lot while modelling a bike unlike that of a car. Well … where is that wonderful tutorial of lionTR that inspired. would be nice if you shared the wealth ! :scream:

Nice work on your model by the way.
