What would be the most appropriate program to manage your business as a freelancer - as one have to keep up with taxes and all.

regarding taxes, nothing will beat having an actual accountant. They will project for you how much % of your income you should save for taxes. then you just have to be diligent about keeping that % of your income saved for when taxes are due.
regarding other management of your business. I personally love using Google and all of google’s available applications.
Gmail
google docs - spreadsheets, charts, word documents
Google notebook - for per project notes
Google Calendar - to keep track of due dates and day specific appointments or information
All of the above is web based which can come in handy if your traveling and ever need access to your information.
spreadsheets make up the bulk of my business management tools. The author and management Guru Peter Drucker says “What gets measured, gets managed” and there is little that gets measured that cannot be put into a simple spreadsheet.
