hi
can anyone help i am confused abt the type of file i should choose as a rendering output.
i am redering my animation to image sequence right now . but i cant decide which one is best. i am opting for tiff sequence right now. but some ppl suggest png and some softwares only support tga (tmpgenc which is very useful to make mpeg-1 files later on).
right now i am using ulead media studio for editing the animations but its mpeg1 compression sucks and messes up the final result,
any suggestions? what method are you guys using?
best rendering output for animation?
I suggest .mov for tests. Uncompressed .avi for final animations for later use, and a sequence of .jpgs for major renders that could crash, then you can just start off where it left off. I dont suggest targas of tiffs unless you are going to need the alpha channel for later. Jpgs are just fine if you have them set to full quality. Then compile them in Videomach. Its a free program, google it.
i know what you mean when you talk abt render crash. man i have lost hours of rendering just because of that now ive learned my lesson and always render it to image sequence.
I DO NOT USE JPG AT ALL.
this is the worst file type.
RPF is well while it is a little bit big. So many options inside.
TIFF, TGA is well for simple compositions.
MOV is nice because it holds alpha.
If you don’t want alpha cannels I think .bmp is quite alright because you don’t loose any iq to compression. I usually use Divx for avi’s, I’m not a big fan of quicktime!
I almost always render .tga sequences because they contain an alpha channel. If you’re not going to need alpha channels for compositing then .bmp seems like a good bet.good luck!
I suggest Targas only cause if your systems crashes it will have saved up to your last rendered frame. You can always re-render out your targas later into .mov.avi or what ever.
Does anyone know the best settings for encoding to Divx?
I’ve tried heaps of settings but I can never get it looking good, all the time it’s really blocky/pixelated and you can’t tell the difference between 320x240 and 640x480!
BMP is only 8-bit color. Probably not a good idea to use for anything.
If you don’t want alpha channel - use 16 bit Targas.
If you want alpha channel and don’t want 1mb + file size - use Alpha split - and batch process your color files in photoshop.
Jpg will add compression. Anytime you add compression to video files you run the risk of artifacs and noise in your video.

I personally prefer PNGs because they have an alpha channel, and lossless compression, making it way smaller than BMPs, TIFFs, or TGAs;
