I know the theory of UV maps.
I don’t understand the tools in maya. In blender you just mark seam, in maya it seams you need many different projections.
How should I begin to learn.

Well. In Maya it’s all about picking faces and do various projections on them. Not the most elegant out there. Once you laid down the UV, Maya’s relax tool isn’t too bad however.
Anyway feel free to export your model to unwrap it in any application you like. Most people I know don’t unwrap stuff in Maya much except smaller props.

It goes over multiple projections, when to use planar vs cylindrical projection, cutting and sewing UVs in the editor window, basically everything needed for UVs.
