Basics of Modo (Help)

#1

I’ve been using Maya for some years now, and now am starting to use Modo.

The interface is new to me, and I just need help finding a few things that I used to use Maya.

First, lets say I create a Cube, and of course there are 8 Verticies total but lets say I want to subdivide the cube so it has 12. I hope this makes sense. I tried hitting tab but that just converts the shape to a subd. I just want more verticies to manipulate within the cube.

2d EX: This is default

.= Vertex point (selection point)

.|------------------|.
 | |
.|------------------|.

I want to subdivide it in half (no physically) but the selections.

.|---------|.---------|.
 | | |
.|---------|.---------|.

That didn’t turn out as pretty as I had it in my head but I hope it makes sense.

I would really appreacite the help, in Maya it was in the channel editor under subdivide and you typed in 4 or 5 etc… but I don’t know how it works in Modo.

Thank you in advance.

I’m not sure at what stage you are at, so here are a few options:

At creation time, you can do it through the options in the Tool Properties.
After creation, you could subdivide the mesh in the Mesh Edit menu under Commands.
If you just want one side to be split, use Edge Slice from the same Mesh Edit menu (shortcut C) and click on the two edges you want to split. (Remember, you can change the placement of this split until you drop the tool.)

I hope this gets you on your way.

Just wanted to add, modo does not have the concept of history like Maya. Once you do something in modo and hit the spacebar…its done. No going back in the history like with Maya and making small alterations once you drop a tool. So in modo, as mentioned to do what you want select the build-cube tool, and then look at the properties and add the subdivision there.

shift-d, choose the faceted option.

Welcome to the wonderful world that is modo. I am also a Maya user. Playing with modo revolutionized the way I model and think about modeling, plus modo made it fun again.

Another really cool way to divide your cube in half:

Try the Loop slice tool (Alt C) - Select 2 adjacent faces in the direction you want to sub-divide, click the tool, and it will automatically create and edge loop. There is a similar feature in Maya 7 and Maya 8, plus it was included in mjPolyTools (can’t remember what it is called right now…)

Have fun!

P.S. - Wait till you render something - sa-weet!

Best Regards,

Thank you guys, that Definitely helped!!

I’m still getting used to the interface buy I have to admit it’s way better to use than Maya (although old habits are really hard to kill)

I already sent a thank you post reply yesterday but it still hasn’t been added so just in case I wanted to make sure you guys got the thanks.

Thank you guys, that was great! I’m really starting to like Modo a lot more!

I’ve been playing the tutorial, and am building the Gun barrel (and the casing with the boolean) well…it’s starting to lag a bit on my mac (MBP 2.1 ghz c2d 1gb of ram) should I upgrade to 2gb of ram? Is that what’s making the system lag?

Once again thank you so much guys, for your help.
