Basic animating-- one layer vs. multiple?

#1

I am trying to animate a simple painting that is composed of a thick black outline, and several shades of paint underneath.

My goal is to create an animation that makes the outline look it is disappearing, essentially erased, or drawn in reverse. It seems that separating the painting in to two layers, and then keyframing the one layer is the simplest thing to do but I am completely stymied as to how to create the animation.

I’ve tried keyframing with the paintbrush, eraser, and masking it to no avail. What should I do?

Maybe using a trackmatte will help you out?

If you want the squiggles to draw on, first create a new solid. Then draw a path using the pen tool in the path that you want the shape to “Erase” or “Draw on”. Then use Effect/Generate/Stroke. (Or Trapcode’s 3D stroke if you prefer the extra control) You can animate the size, start and end parameters so it draws on. Then place it over your squiggle layer, and set the sqiggle layers trackmatte to “Alpha Matte” or “Alpha inverted Matte”. That will hide the layer you just made and use it as a reveal.
