Here in the Tigard High School CG lab we have been experiencing bad riff files on a number of lab computers. Students will save normally but when they return next class period the files will not open and inform them that there is a “bad riff file” with a system message.
This happened to me ages ago with a riff file I was working on. They can get corrupted like any file on the computer can. Don’t know what could have caused it. Its best to back up often and save iteratively.
Also, in case it’s not mentioned in my thread, we’ve found that saving RIFF files Uncompressed can help prevent corruption. It will make the file larger, but it’s far better that losing your work entirely.
To save a file Uncompressed, use File > Save As and check the Uncompressed box before clicking the Save button.
Based on a couple of tests I did:
First Test
I used Iterative Save after a file was first saved using File > Save As with the Uncompressed box checked, then three Layers were added each with a brush stroke in a different color and different Composite Methods applied to each Layer. The Iterative Save version was larger than the first File > Save As version so seems using Iterative Save changes to the image were added without changing the Uncompressed status.
Second Test:
I repeated all of the above on another copy of the same Canvas imagery, using File > Save As for the first save with the Uncompressed box not checked and the file size was much smaller than in the first save of the First Test described above. When I added the Layers with various Composite Methods and different cololr brush strokes on each Layer, then used Iterative Save, the file was larger than the first saved version but still not as large as the Iterative Save version in the First Test described above.
Iterative Save with Uncompressed RIFF files appears as we’d like it to!
