B-Movie Entry: Yanick Martineau
New thumbnail sketch I did today during a boring meeting at work. The actual drawing is not bigger than 3 by 4 cm. I think I found my composition
As I recall, under the old Hollywood studio systems, the b-movie was the second movie the studio was producing at a lesser budget than the a-movie. In part to keep their livestock of actors and directors busy. It didn?t mean that it was intentionally bad, but because of its meagre means, the first take was often used and it was often the only take. If the sound wasn?t perfect or a microphone was in the frame, it was still used. There was no post-processing back then.
These productions were actually good schools for editors who had to try to do miracles with what they had. It also gave the directors and DPs a little more room to experiment because the studios were less strict on supervising the lesser budget productions.
With time, the b-movie label came to include all movie productions that were done on a small budget with the exception maybe of the independent art film. However the main thing they all have in common, other than the micro budget, is that they were not intended to be bad. A lot of them tried to compensate the lack of resources and talent with high concept stories, stunts and special effects. This is why most of them were and still are quite entertaining!
This is my take on a concept art piece that a young filmmaker might carry around with him from one pitch to another trying to convince the studio executives that it can be done on a small budget and that no expensive movie stars would be needed, the subject being enough to carry the movie.
I hope you like it as much as I enjoyed making it.

Wicked image!. so very crisp and clean to look at. Particularly fond of how you created those clouds, very pleasing to the eye. Only critique is the fire power from the bi plane mid ground looks rushed.
Great Lighting for this piece, nice green especially
Marley
Thanks Marley and Arad for you encouragement. I did the bullet tracers using a PArray Particle System with a Mental Ray self-illuminating material. I didn’t wan’t them to grab the eyes too quickly and break the flow of the composition, this is why I did not emphasise them and left them as the renderer spit them out.
Great choices and nice final image I think I should have done something along those lines. The clouds are especially nice.
Yanick - congratulations on completing your entry! Your color selection (a minor triad) really looks great!
Great image youre concept is pretty epic, and the clouds look great!
Congratulations
Thanks Korendo, Ohmagatsumi,
I’m happy that you like it. This project was really fun and it was nice to go back to doing someting creative in CG after a year of hiatus. Good luck to both of you.
