B-Movie Entry: Tim Winkelman
Here is a skechbook page with some ideas. The composition sketch in the upper left shows the basic theme. An eye creature in the center with a lot of weapons pointed at it. This will be similiar to some of the eye injury comic book images from the 1950’s.
Another composition experiment with rule of thirds is under this because I was not sure about putting the eye at the center of the image. Also on this page are some eye creature sketches, a burning city for the background, and a list of characters who could be around the edge of the image attacking the eye.
Next I did a monster sketch. I was still not sure about what I wanted the monster to look like. I am having some problems here because I really want the eye to be the focal point of the image and I feel that the mouth and other details are taking away from that.
Another page of doodles trying to work out my problems with the eye creature and I think I have the answer. The TV with the big eye should work as the focal point of the image. This also works well with the theme as it represents television killing the B Movies. Just ignore the eyeball with the trailing optic nerve above the TV. This is just another doodle that got too close.
The bottom of the page has some hypno circles. These will probably be photoshopped onto the image centered on the eybeball as the last step of my painting process. Also at the bottom of the page is another composition sketch. I am wanting to put bikini girls next to the TV, but it looks like this is not working and I decided to go back to my first composition on the other page.
The television is being attacked by the Army, the Navy and the Police. All I have to do is add a construction worker and an Indian chief, and I can draw the Village People. I haven’t decided yet if this is the direction I want to go.
I’ve been busy, but now I’m back working on this contest the last few days and I’m hoping to finish my entry tomorrow. Here is a quick sketch to work out the composition.
Here is the image with the colors flatted in Photoshop. I need to do some rendering on this before I submit the final.
Here is the image with the coloring done. I will be submitting the high resolution version of this as final.
I’m pretty happy with it. Unfortunately I may have slipped into the wrong decade here. I think my image has more of a sixties or seventies pop art feel to it and may not look enough like the fifties. When I saw it was going that way, I decided I liked it and just went with it.
In this story, the action heros of all the B movies come together to fight their final battle against an evil electronic box with hypnotic powers.
