Latest Update: Final Image: RABID REVENGE OF THE NAKED MOLE RAT!

#2

This is the first computer art comp I have entered. I was egged on by a mate (and fellow cg member) who thought I should give it a go.
I had a couple of initial ideas for this comp but I was leaning in the direction of an animal based film. One animal that I have admired for a long time is the humble Naked Mole Rat. So I started sketching a few!

Here are some more Naked Mole Rat sketches, i’ve also started to try and plan out a layout. I was playing with the idea of the trusted ‘Poster’ concept. Originaly I wanted something along the lines of ‘Surge of the Naked Mole Rats!’ with army tanks, kissing 50’s couple, damsel in distress, you get the idea. But I like the sketch at the bottom, single rat on dude’s head.

I like the idea of giving the film a title like ‘REVENGE of the Naked Mole Rat!’ implying that there was a previous film? I am more and more keen on having a single Rat on a head. I also like the ‘cr*p puppet’ aspect which i feel is synonymous with the b-movie, guy in a suit, real footage of ‘giant’ animals etc.

This is my final concept, and the start of my WIPs. As you can see its blue pencil (the pro’s seem to favour this) and it shows the ‘Cr*p, RAT puppet’ ‘attacking’ the damsel in ‘distress’ during filming. The idea is that the puppet is so rubbish, they are on take 49 or so, and she is a bit more ‘distressed’ than normal

Here is my Lighting/Tonal idea for my image, almost ‘torch in the face’ like.

Woohoo matey, love the blue WIP sketches! great idea too. Looking forward to seeing the final piece!!!

Software: Photoshop

…and this is my favourite item in my movie memorabilia collection. This is a very rare, signed(!) photo of Marla Trixie. There are believed to be only 15 signed photos in existence. This snapshot is made even more rare by the fact that it is a glimpse into the world of early film making, and is part of the provenance attached to the stories surrounding GoreTown Studios.
Following the infamously shocking loss of profits for the films ‘Mole Rat!’ (1948) and sequal ‘Revenge of the Mole Rat!’ (1949) the film studio decided to try and claw back money by filming what was said to be the ‘final instalment’ in the ‘Rat’ series (but as we all know 7 more films were released between 1950 and 1958!)

Marla Trixie (having changed her name from Rena Duggan in 1946) was given the lead role of ‘Lilly’ in ‘Rabid Revenge of the Naked Mole Rat!’ after she was spotted in an article for ‘Cheeks’ magazine, as it was thought that her involvement in the project would draw in the crowds, but this was not to be the case.
Marla starred in many ‘B’ movies in her long (and fairly unsuccessful!) career, totalling over 167 productions, including ‘Attack of my Slug!’ (1947), ‘My Car Ate My Sweetheart!’ (1947) Co-starring Richard Richie, and ‘Bat Cats!’ (1953) featuring the young Timmy Harold, But for her part in ‘RABID REVENGE of the NAKED MOLE RAT!’ Marla is most famous (along with the string of divorces and lengthy shoplifting trials!).

Not to be outdone, the puppet has had quite an eventful life since the making of ‘Rabid Revenge of the Naked Mole Rat!’ (1950) too. ‘Ratty’ (hatefully nicknamed ‘Crappy!’ by the disgruntled crew) was responsibly for £1,500 worth of court fines and loss of 6 weeks film time after the un-cooperative creature nearly blinded Trixie’s co-star Adam Daniels. After the film’s release, ‘Ratty’ was housed in the effects warehouse, until plummeting film profits forced the production company to sell him in '55 (along with most of the accumulated props in the collection) for much needed funds. Ratty sold in auction for the princely sum of £162.33p to an unknown bidder. He was unheard of again until 1967 when he was stolen in a house burglary, now believed to be worth £4,000, and didn’t resurface until 1993 when he popped up in an auction house in London, the puppet was promptly seized and returned to the rightful owner, but not before resulting in the sentencing of six known antiques dealers who had been involved in an underground goods shifting racket.

Film mistakes

  • 00:11:05 mins. Look out for the ‘hidden’ plaster cast on Marla’s arm in the church scene. This was a result of the sound guy’s enthusiastic ‘recording’.

-00:26:00 mins, crew reflected in cake shop window.

-00:54:09 mins. See if you can spot the naked fellow in the window (top right) during the city ‘chase’ scene.

-00:58:16 mins. Man holding upside down newspaper in bar.

-00:03:03, 00:14:07, 00:21:04, 00:49:42, 01:21:32 mins, microphone in shot.

-01:32:00 mins, puppeteers’ shadows during penultimate ‘attack’ scene.
