Great bonobo detail! he looks so angry now though, could almost be the villian.

Bran, ranaazeem, Emptyshell, loocas, Alouette, Eskarina, gregmcquay, gpepper, MartinNielsen,
thank you so much!

axiomatic,
yep, everything wip but I’m taking notes, so no worries! Thanks man.

fallenherald,
I will. Not sure when I’ll have the time but I can show a little tutorial on how I sculpt wrinkles. Stay tuned!

vitorugo,
hahaha! Not sure about the “handsome” part but I can definitely see that they are related!
Yep, all Zbrush polypaint for the Bonobo so far. The girl is a combination of polypaint and images projected.
Thanks!

thejeff,
thank you so much man, you’re a rockstar in this challenge

Intervain,
Mag, were you in vacations or something? Go back to work on your entry, go go go!
Thanks!

gentlykind,
I agree! He looks evil now. I’ll do some renders before I fix his facial expression though, because with the lighting and subsurface scatter, those details will be gone like 20-30% and he might not look as evil at the end (and also because of the semi-profile final pose).
Thanks!

-Kris

#243

Hah, did someone mention hardcore modelling challenge?!?

#244

Thanks for the proxy explanation. Makes good sense to simplify it while your planning. The detail in Jones’ face is really well done, I’m loving this project.

#245

oh man, your work is so great that i cant find right words for.

its so B and so AAA at same time - perfect mix for this challenge!

#246

amazing stuff once again
can’t wait to see where you’ll take this

#247

Fantastic! Can’t wait to see the end result, but it’s a treat to see the WIP.

#248

Sweet loving the additional details on Bonobo, can’t wait to see more great updates on your submission so far it just keeps blowing my mind every update well done Kris!

#249

Damn he’s angry,:scream: Keep it up Kris!

#250

Oh dear! Sorry for drooling all over your thread!

Hey Kris,

putting all technical excellence in your work aside, about which there can be no argument, here's some food for thought for you.

I've been thinking about your concept and something stops the whole thing for me dead in its tracks. It just does not take off in my head and the reason is your title " Death & Taxes From outer Space...", which is, to be frank, quite an imagination-killer, at least for me. While I fully understand the humor in regards to the IRS etc, I dont think its a good idea to pursue the caricature/sarcasm route for this challenge, but would suggest you change the title to something more "serious", which goes along better with the whole B-movie theme instead, ie "The Thing From Outer Space That Turns Men Into Apes" (a rather lame suggestion, I know, but you catch my drift I am sure). Just something that really makes you see an interesting story behind the image, something that takes you into another world, which the topic of taxes really does not, regardless of how hated & feared the IRS is. ( A close acquaintance of mine has been audited twice already!) Taxes just carry a bad aftertaste and drag you down, if not on the conscious, then definitely on the subconscious level, which I don´t think you really want to have associated with your work. Bottomline is, right now I don't see an interesting story behind it and this image could create so much more inside the viewers mind with a proper, stereotypical title, than just appreciation of the excellence in models etc.

To support what I am saying, here's a quote from the challenge instructions:
"The story is the primary component and is the most crucial element in all judging. The emotive impact and implication of “the story behind the image” is the aspect that is most important.Your work must capture the imagination of the viewer and draw them in without relying on any prior knowledge of the story."

Cheers and keep up the great work!:arteest:

PS: I think a different kind of pose for her might also work a tad better. Something that makes her more of a bimbo relying heavily on Bonobo for protection perhaps?! Having her in a sitting position implies some sort of comfort which, depending on where you want to take the whole thing, might or might not be such a good thing overall.

PPS: To me that stool implies a Diner's environment, so "Mars Attacks Cafe`50's" or something like that might work as an alternate title with that current pose. Anyways, just my 2 cents. ;)

Very preliminary test. I finished the UVs and started painting some color maps. I’m not happy with this render at all but I’m too tired to try to improve it tonight. I’ll be checking your threads and replying to mine, but I’ll not be posting any new images for the next 4 days. My girlfriend’s family will be visiting us and I’ll not touch this project at all…

You guys have fun!
-Kris

ps.: I will be back soon…

#253

Great Kris !
Love the back light : it creates something really nice

congrats

#254

axiomatic,
ha! There she is!

WyattHarris,
thank you so much my friend.

Staszek, StephaneD,
thanks for the compliments guys. Your works are great and it means a lot to me

ekah, Pteropus, Gunilla,
thank you so much!

Vimmy,
he is angry because I modeled him a small package

TheRazorsEdge,
I hear you! There are a couple of other elements being worked on, including a fourth character that, as I mentioned in one of my previous posts, will help this mess to make more sense
The title is a working title but yeah, it will be IRS/Tax related/funny, that’s the whole point of this work and some people will like while some will not. It’s understandable and all good!
Thanks man!

-Kris

#255

Amazing work Kris, very inspiring. :applause:
Can’t wait for more updates!

#256

I just wanted to point out that my last comment is not about like or dislike. I actually do like your idea and am enjoying it as a caricature very much the same way I enjoy the caricatures of WW1&2 times depicting world issues with cartoon characters. My point is story and story alone and currently the image just does not take my mind any further than initial amusement and agreement with your message, since I don’t see a typical B-movie story behind it. Anyways, I am looking forward to seeing where you’ll take it eventually.

Enjoy your weekend off!

Cheers!

#257

Simply amazing,Can’t wait to see the final image!

#258

This is looking fantastic. I’m not sure why you don’t like the last bonobo render. I’m curious to actually know why. Enjoy the weekend

#259

PascalR,
thank you sir!

TheRazorsEdge,
it’s a wip and as I mentioned before, other elements will be added to help the story. A quick look at my portfolio will show you that I add a good amount of thought to a lot of my work. Wait and let the idea develop. I can guarantee you that the final image will not even need texts to be understandable. Thanks for your honest input and your concerns

diissar,
thanks, me too!

BrettSinclair,
the thing is, some people like developing their images till they get something cool to show and then you see a few images posted during the challenge and they all look good. Silly people like me will post a lot of images during the process, on-the-fly, meaning that I post stuff as soon as I work on it. At the end you will find some cool images in the mix but a lot of not so great stuff that is there just to show the progress.
This last image is just to show I’m working on the ape texturing/model/lighting, but it relies heavily on post color correction, that I would rather have improved on the 3D render instead, so I can have less post work with very little effort, by spending a little time to fix the color maps. Also, the anatomy/shape of his mouth is weird. Eyes are working, nose kind does too but mouth alone is off. But as I said, it’s a bunch of wip images that don’t make me 100% happy, but they are all walking towards a common objective: to have a cool final image to show, hopefully

Thanks!
-Kris
