B-Movie Entry: Jody Valdes

I refined some odds and ends and combined elements for the lighting that Anamolous and Walrus suggested (thanks guys).

In the top image, I’m trying to keep a bit of dramatic backlighting on the chicken but not letting the kitchen and characters get lost in the process.

In the middle, I added some ambient light because I felt elements like the book were still not readable (I may have overdone it).

Lastly, the bottom image switches the back wall to yellow-ish to see if that blends in better with the scene.

Overall, I’m happy with the direction it’s taken. I’ll render out a final tomorrow though last minute comments are welcome

Hey Jody,

I really like the top one the best, as you said, it really has a dramatic feel to it

Cheers to a great finish!

I’m liking the top one best, as well. I agree the previous lighting was too dark, but I like the additional drama, compared with some of the brighter versions.
For the writing on the book, you could always try just lightening the color of the text (to a golden yellow, say) and see if that pops out more.
If you had more time I would say make them luminous, as though they were freshly branded into the cover of the book, but that’d probably be a bit of a squeeze.
In any case, great results, and I’m eager to see the final-- give yourself enough time for your pshop tweaks and upload early, dude!

I like the top version too, for all the reasons they mentioned above.

It’s Tuesday, Chicken Tuesday. Claire’s in-laws have decided to surprise her by inviting themselves over for a late dinner. They will expect a nice chicken dinner because it’s Chicken Tuesday.

Desperate to win their respect, Claire had frantically gone through all of her recipe books. Finally, it was inside her Great Grandmother’s book of “Forbidden Recipes” that Claire had found just the right recipe. Assuming the ominous title was just part of her Great Grandma’s colorful character, Claire prepared dinner that evening completely oblivious that the scarlet tome was in fact a book of dark rituals and spells. Her Great Grandma, it seems, was pretty wild in her day.

Now, as Claire stares at the awakened Chicken Zombie waddling it’s way out of her oven, she realizes that the evening may not go as smoothly as planned. Claire wishes she had made a salad instead but the Zombie Chicken only cackles evilly and draws it’s carving fork. It’s hunger is burning.

The doorbell rings, Claire drops the book to the floor. Dinner is served …

Here is my final image, inspired by every bad movie I’ve had the opportunity to watch  What I liked the most about B-movies are the silly monsters and over the top villains. I’ve tried to bring some of that badness into this illustration.

The story behind the image:

Bergquist, Anamolous, Walrus, I went with that top picture (from the lighting test post) in the end. There’s so many lights in the scene, I’m rather surprised that it works!

Paperboy, Noodlz, thanks for the support! I’m glad you guys like it.

Thanks to everyone for the support and feedback during this challenge! I learned a lot.

There are so many great entries being posted, good luck to everyone!

Beautiful work, Jody. I love the stainless steel finish on the oven, the gleam in the heroine’s eye and the charred skin of the zombie chicken (he looks delicious). Best of luck in the judging!
