Latest Update: Final Image: Vampire Pioneers From Lake Terror

#2

It’s the poster for a sequel to a film I made with some friends for a 48 hour film festival last summer.
This is what I came up with after looking at an obscene number of old posters from the '50s and '60s.

#3

I’ve wanted to participate in one of these challenges for a while now, and when I saw the concept I knew that it was time to jump in.
I’m planning on doing this image primarily in ZBrush. If you have any crits or comments on the layout or concept, please let me know.
If anyone is curious, the first installment of VPLT is available on youtube here. I’m responsible for the opening sequence. (I also had my brains sucked out… It took a while to get the chocolate syrup washed off.)

#4

Maybe have the vampires legs over the letters?
If she’s supposed to be sexy, the legs will be important. If you noticed, a large quantity of posters focus on a girls legs. Might be an 80’s rule though… now that I think of it.

#5

You’re right… The leg occluded by the letter needs a bit more attention brought to it. I’ll play around with the composition and see if there’s a way to put the leg over the lettering without making it hard to read.

#6

I’m just getting acclimated to my pentab for the first time, but this is a start.
I’m counting on you guys to tear this apart so that I can have as good a composition as possible when I go into modeling. Have at it.

#7

I’m refining the layout here. I still plan on having a couple of running/screaming little figures in the foreground. If I get ambitious I might have them being chased by a yolk of oxen monsters.

#8

Actually I prefer the one with lady vampire sitting with her leg atop the title. It’s more visually appealing for me.

#9

My wife said the same thing… I’ll have to play around with that composition a bit more to see if I can get it to work with the title better.

#10

Just trying another pose.

#11

Technically, I never left, but I’m horrible at WIPs and I’m an excruciatingly slow modeler, hence the month without any posts. Sorry. I’ll try to show some of how I got to where I am in the next couple of days.

I’m just making sure that the pose works for the concept and testing some lighting/materials. I obviously still a lot of modeling and texturing to do.

#12

I decided to stick with the second concept despite feedback indicating that it’s less appealing. The main reason is that this way I don’t have to model a whole body. This is my first attempt at modeling a likeness, and it’s proving to be very time consuming. Having said all that, the other reason I’m sticking with this design is that I like it better

#13

I’ve still got a long way to go, but I finally feel like I’m making progress.

Still left to do:
Lots of detailing (particularly the hands)
Tweak the Pose (so it’s not so symmetrical)
Model the hair and bodice
Model the globe and the space ships
Textures

Any feedback would be appreciated.

This is a belated breakdown of how I got the VPLT Queen to where she is.
I started by blocking out a basemesh in Blender from some reference photos, and then I took it into ZBrush. Initially I tried to stick with the reference, but once I started posing and sculpting the expression I ended up deviating quite a bit.

#15

I have to move on from the queen and finish the rest of the image… I still have the covered space wagons to model and all the text and layout to do. As such, here she is. I may be able to take small suggestions, but I have to commit to most of what is here if I’m going to finish in time.

#16

Ive spent every free moment outside of work for the last three days trying to figure out how to get this rendered… My computer is a joke and while Blender is awesome, it just doesn’t play nice at print resolution. It renders ok, but there’s a bug somewhere that discards the image as soon as it’s done building it if it’s over a certain size. No temp files, no nothing. Last night I finally just zoomed the camera in and panned around the image rendering in 1000x800 chunks stitching it all together in the Gimp. Not an elegant solution, but I haven’t slept much this week and the deadline is approaching.
This morning I started putting it all together. I still need to add some more text at the bottom and I may run the whole thing through some subtle filters before I call it done. You’ve got a little more than a day to weigh in with any feedback…

While researching the Oregon Trail, attractive blond historian Sydney Howard (Amanda Slippy – THE FLOWER PRINCESS, VAMPIRE PIONEERS FROM LAKE TERROR) crosses paths with handsome CIA agent/martial artist Dirk Phoenix (Ari Bloodgood – FIST OF THE MOSQUITO, THE RETURN OF THE MOSQUITO) who is investigating a mysterious string of murders from 10 years earlier in the idyllic town of LAKE TERROR. Together they unearth a plan to exact revenge on the WHOLE PLANET! Will they survive the impending invasion? Who is the mysterious man with the salt shaker bandoleer? If the Vampires are from Neptune, why does the title say they’re from Lake Terror? Find out if you dare in the shocking next chapter in the VAMPIRE PIONEERS FROM LAKE TERROR saga!
Jay Laurance (HOW TO LOVE A QUITTER, CRIME SPREE) stars as the VAMPIRE PIONEER QUEEN in a film that Someone Probably called “the most thrilling movie of the summer!”

See the movie that Roger Ebert called “…one of the best horror films ever made – and, as an inescapable result, one of the most horrifying,” and when you’ve finished watching THE DAWN OF THE DEAD, watch VAMPIRE PIONEERS FROM LAKE TERROR 2!

I found a mistake when I looked at my “final image” from a different monitor. I think it’s fixed now. In any case, I won’t get an opportunity to make any more changes seeing as I’m on my lunch break and I’ll be working through the end of the contest.
