As far as drawing from drawings goes....

is it ok in your sketch book to draw another persons drawing? even if its a persons concept art, or sculpture, or even the old masters? as long as of course your not dumb enough to put it into your portfolio. But seriously, is this a big deal for the industry? I mean not like we all dont copy each other anyway =)

Doing studies of other people’s drawings, especially masters, is a very good way for you to pick up techniques and learn to observe better. It’s no different from studying a photo or a scuplture, except that you can see linework or values used in an artist’s work to assist you.

However, it’s not good to keep to one style for study. You need to get a good cross section or you’ll never develop a style of your own. For learning, studying and drawing other people’s work is very rewarding, as long as it’s only PART of your learning.

I agree with what erilaz said.

Another thing is that sketchbooks are like one’s diary of ideas. You should do whatever you want in it. Experiment in it, doodle, etc. Public broadcast of artists’ sketchbooks is a rather recent phenomenon. Don’t edit yourself when working in your sketchbooks or try to clean them up for public display. I really like seeing uninhibited raw sketches from artists, but I wouldn’t demand of it. Sketchbooks are very private part of artist’s thought process.
