Hi all,
I’ve been reading through threads and haven’t found this question yet. Does anyone know of an art school in the US that has athletic programs? I’m not talking about a wellness center or Friday night dodgeball. I mean a school that has some emphasis on sports. Yes, I know it’s a long shot, but it could be a serious factor for my decisions. I’m looking for a school that has a good computer animation major (not necessarily an art school, but a good degree in computer animation just the same). The sports I’m looking for are soccer, track and field, cross-country, and it’s a real uncommon sport - rifle.
Thanks for any reply,
Jared
Art schools with athletics
Check out SCAD, they have all of the sports that you mentioned (except rifle) and they have a Bachelors/Masters in Visual Effects or Motion Graphics
I’m pretty sure that SCAD and AAU are the only two art schools with serious intercollegiate teams. There are also some good animation programs at larger schools, like San Jose State University.
That being said, I really wouldn’t recommend trying to participate in an intercollegiate sports team while studying art. They both demand way too much time to be able to do both well. I met a guy from AAU who played for them, and he said it was a huge regret for him.
Many larger universities have both, but at that level they are usually recruiting athletes. And as previously mentioned, the time needed to do both an art/animation program and a sports team, is probably too much for most people to be successful at both at the same time. Larger universities will usually offer intramural sports which might just give you the thrill of competition while still allowing you to have the time needed to succeed in your major. And if you find that the sport you want isn’t actually a sponsored intramural sport there will most likely be a club for that. For example if you were interested in game creation, then the Univ. of Utah has a good program and sports, both intramural and clubs.
Just a thought. Good Luck.
Thanks for the replies,
You both make a really good point. I’ll have to weigh my options. I am going to be physically active either way (whether it’s jogging or getting together with friends), so was thinking it may be nice to have a school applaud the efforts. I’ve planned on going to an art school for a while now, so sports was never something I counted on.

Attended AAU for a bit. From what I observed, be careful as to how much time you dedicate between sports and the animation program. You might find yourself sticking around playing catch up after receiving the degree.
