Arnold Procedurals/standins

So I am making a stadium scene that has several park areas with trees and bushes. so I was looking around for easy ways to place them and found this video

this was exactly what I was looking for. So I figured out what he did and got everything to work but the Arnold materials I have on the trees don’t show up. when I bring the .ASS file in on its own it works fine but as soon as I link it to the procedural it does not display any material, instead it reverts back to mayas default shader.
can anyone help me? I have tried everything I can think of to get this working and its driving me nuts.

In the “Standin Overrides” section of the shape node’s Arnold tab, untick “Override StandIn Shaders”
