Are there any modo books coming?

#1

Haven’t seen anything in B&N lately…are there any plans for a modo book?

#2

geez. they just put out the app like 2 weeks ago.
plus theres the book that comes with it + videos.
ontop of that, modellers arent that hard to figure out, i dont see why you would need a book for a modeller:/ make a box, and play with buttons to see what happens. after 2 days of playing you should know whats what, so you could create models with it.

( on a personal note. im kinda against books for modelling that focus on an app entirely, and arent general enough that could be applied to more applications. id rather see something that caters to pretty much everyone ( unless very specific like zbrush, where there really isnt anything else like it ).

after 2 days of playing you should know whats what

or alternatively after 2 days you have a cube with arms :D, I’m yet to find out whats inside the box, the UPS guy should be here today, they rang friday so they could charge my credit card with those extra import duties, might go hide in the garden so I can pounce on him before he gets to the door

Like ambient-whisper says you might have to wait a couple of months since it just came out.

Yeah, thanks for the tip…I’d never have guessed how to build a box in modo.

Seriously, Lightwave 8 had several book being written before its release, so it’s not like I’m asking something totally stupid. I was kind of hoping for something that went into a little more detail about customizing the app with perl and xml…something that the manual doesn’t go into a lot of detail on, as well as a few tutorials.

#5

Yes.

I could tell you more, but then I would have to kill you.

#6

I guess since this was a 1.0 release they wanted to keep things under wraps a bit more, I’m guessing here, I mean you dont let your kids look at their presents before you give them to them.

Agreed. I’m hoping more on a book show me how to fully use the advance tools of modo for doing organic stuff.

#8

Sure about that? Just kidding.

Of course Lightwave 8 had several books being written before it was released - it was version 8. It’s a 15 year old application, and if you go back to Videoscape 3D, and Aegis Modeler it’s a bit older. Previous experts, and authors on the subject were lined up to do books for it. All they had to write was what is new about the application. They have already covered everything else. How do you think most of it was already written? Ding. ding. ding. ding. - BINGO!

(It’s not like a book for version 7 couldn’t do the trick anyway).

I don’t think there has ever been an actual “book store” book released for a version 1.0 application before it’s release. I mean… come on now - how many modo experts are there right now do you think?

In this day, and age it seems in most cases you’d be lucky if you get a user Manual in PDF form for a version 1.0 application.

Modo came with a 500+ page instructional book, a PDF instructional manual, and a DVD instructional video. I think they covered all the bases for a version 1.0 application better than anyone has ever done before them, and I am far more than satisfied with the efforts that they have gone through to bring users up to speed thus far with these efforts.

That’s my 2¢ :buttrock:

[post edit] The manual that comes with modo is 475 pages, not 500+. My bad.

Dan Ablan has said that the new magazine he is editor for (HDRI-something or other), will cover several programs specifically, INCLUDING Modo.

Buying a new app this early practically guarantees there’ll be nothing out there, except this forum and what you get with it. Give it a year I reckon, and there’ll be alot of third party stuff for Modo, let alone hopefully new versions and updates, and new videos from Lux.

One of the best things for the future of learning Modo, with third party material, is that it will draw heavily into the LW community, and that, as I say again, has to be one of the key things going for it.

Dan Alban is the editor of the new version of Highend 3D? I thought he was already in bed with sister mag - Key-frame magazine. If this is true, and Dan Alban is editor of HDRI 3D
what happens to Will McCullough, Alex Alvarez, and Darrin Krumweide? I thought they just changed the name from highend magazine to HDRI 3D . I didn’t know it was whole new bag so to speak.

Not that I’m criticizing Alban, or anything. (I have one of his books - it’s awesome)

I would rather not see the gnomon crew dissolve away from the magazine any way thats all. Especially after I already renewed my subscription.

LightWave8 (or L8) was basically lightwave 7 with a few already available plugins added (as far as modeler was concerned). And, most of the LightWave 8 books are probably revisions on earlier versions of LightWave. Modo is a 1.0 version, so there were no earlier books to be revised. Also, modo’s included videos and documentation are much better than those that are included in lightwave, so getting started with modo should not be a big problem, especially if you come from a lightWave backgound.

I don’t mean to be twatty or anything, but I’m really not interested in all this banter about Lightwave books and whether they’re focusing on v7 or 8 or whatever. I’m simply asking if anyone has heard anything about modo books coming down the pipeline. Was that unclear??

I’m very well aware that modo is at v1; considering that several people have been betatesting modo for months as well as the enormous interest generated by the product, I’m merely asking if there are any books on the product being written. I didn’t ask if anything is available today…just coming. The manual and video tutorials are great, but fairly basic stuff. There’s a lot of room for more advanced stuff, whether it be from Luxology or a third party.

I have not heard of any, but usually Amazon has books listed months before they are even started. Publishers love pre-sale.

Typically any poly, or sub-d modeling instruction will suffice once you know the basics of the application, and know your way around.

I don’t know the answer reguarding the current staff, just what was posted on another forum :

LightWave isn’t going anywhere folks.

High End magazine is ending. HDRI 3D will be covering LightWave, XSI, Maya, Messiah, Modo, and much more. As an animator, it’s good to know what can be done in other applications, and apply that to your own. This extended coverage will help bring in more advertisers, which in turn helps keep the LightWave publication on the market.

I’ll still be editing - and you know I use LightWave…

 Great to know!

I am a subscriber so I’m a bit excited about the new issue. I thought the last issue of Highend was a little slim on information, instruction, and overall content, but I have high hopes for the new version. It sounds like highend with bonus detailed rendering info from the description at the website. :applause:

Get back on topic butthead! :banghead:
