Any advice?

Hey folks,

I’m 28 years old, I have a day job (which I despise) and I’m looking for some advice from anyone who currently or has worked in the industry.

I’m currently living in Edinburgh (Scotland), I studied 2D design for a year and also Illustration for the same amount of time, with the hope of working in the concept art industry. Unfortunately the courses here are pretty bland, nothing compared to the design schools in the US or rest of the world. There were no tutorials, no technique advice and even better, one or two of the lecturers were just out of university themselves and still find their feet. The sad thing is this course is one of the most sought after courses where I was studying but I found myself yet feeling like it was a complete waste of my time. This was a few years ago, since then I got myself a full-time job and draw/learn as much as I can in my free time. However, I’m at that point where I’m looking to move into a job where I actually like what I do. The main design/entertain studio near me is Rockstar North, but after looking on their website they suggest learning different programs and having a ‘solid’ educational background.

I’ve just recently become pretty familiar with Photoshop and can’t afford to go back to university. Besides, there are no courses that do anything these studios/developers would class as useful.

So if anyone has had face the same issues but managed to get a job, PLEASE!! If there’s anything you could suggest it would be greatly appreciated!

Darren
