He has a website, tonyryder.com, with a lot of demos that illustrate his method. Additionally on the site he sells his book, which I highly recommend and use in some of my classes.
The envelope is essentially a set of simplified lines connecting the outermost projecting points of a figure or composition - you can basically think of it like the invisible lines of a constellation which connect the dots. Some examples of my students using Ryder’s method of sighting (seeing from point to point and angle to angle) can be seen here in their master copies:
