Animation Challenge #4: Post Progress; Start 12/16/06 End 1/07/07

Animation Challenge # 4

Challenge Start 12/16/06, End 1/07/07

Topics for this challenge are-

Chef cooks bad meat (and knows so)

-or-

Stomped or shot in the foot

For chef cooks bad meat think of the chef contemplating cooking the meat or not. Chef has a busy restaurant and all the meat is spoiled. What does the chef do? Heavily seasons it and prays no one gets sick. There is an inner battle there.

The deadline is in three weeks. If you finish one animation with plenty of time think about doing the other one too.

Make sure to post plenty of progress to get C & C.

Post all of your progress here.

Hi there. Im new here. I would ike to know if we actually need to animate our character with lip sync aswell? or body language will do?

:::Thanks:::

#5

Hey Bryant,
The decision is up to the animator to get the point across. There isn’t any specified audio this time, so no lip-sync is necessary.

Hey yall… Well this is my update:

Story:
Basically I want to start out with a “tv” turn on effect and we’re in an alleyway. A Neo (Matrix Trilogy) type character flies and lands, cracking the cement where he lands. He stands up and does a slow mo walk toward the camera. While he does taht a small fly is pestering and buzzing around him. He tries at first to swat it away. Then he tries karate. It finally lands on his foot. He hastily takes out a handgun and fires! Too bad the fly already moved. He gets up and limps away while talkign on the cell phone, " I need an Exit."

Models:
I’m going for a more cartoony feel for this piece. I usually try and stick to realism, the alley sould be pretty real looking, the model is going to reflect the piece. Goofy!
Neo (WIP) (75% Complete)
Alleyway
Fly

I’m using the freeware program Anim8or. After i’m done i’m expecting it to be able to hold its own against our Max competitors! lol Mind you this is my first actual 3d challenge!

Hey Enite, that sounds like a fun animation. Though with all the work involved with making it i dont think you will be able to make the 3 week deadline. If you really want to make the deadline you should make a schedule for your self:

-Write a list of all the things you need to do. Then next to them write how long you think it will take to do them.
-Next figure out how much time each day you can work on it (free time after work or school, or both).
-Finally make a weekly schedule with tasks to do each day up to the deadline. If you dont complete the task make sure to add that time to the next day.

This may sound daunting, but it is the best way to work in a crunch. It helped me graduate and make my showreel when many people had there doubts. And i took best of portfolio at graduation

Good luck,

Matt

Well the only thing that I think will take long is the Animating and Rendering! lol Yeah started that model on sunday, so i think i’m making good time. Only thing left is hair, sunglasses, a bit of texturing and rigging. The Alley will be fairly simply modeling wise. Texturing is going to prove a bit more daunting! haha. Thanks for your support man! I hope to post a few more updates soon!

Big challenge there Enite  I agree with dudeacle about the shortness of the deadline for that project. Since this is your first challenge, go for it and post whatever you got. I hope you have a great process and learn a lot! That head looks pretty good btw.

Looking forward to seeing everyone’s animation. I’ll have to sit out due to other commitments, but gladly give C&C to anyone open.

Anarkis, i dont recommend creating anything from scratch, except for the animation of course. The challenges focus towards acting and good animation, so focus on that. What software do you use? Im sure someone can recommend a free rig.

#14

i,m can use maya

Thankiu for help !

#15

sounds awesome guys!

Not sure which one I am doing yet, but the brainstorming and sketching will start today.
good ideas btw

Haha I wish someone would have told me about not having to create things from scratch earlier… Oh well! It is coming along rather well!

Models:
My “Neo” model is coming out rather well! All I have left to model on him are his stylish sunglasses. I’m debating about weather I will have enough time to animate his trench coat by hand or I should just make him wear a black jumpsuit(Maybe a Trinityesc shiney one?) Another big debate about “Neo” is weather or not I should use textures? The materials look fine on him I think, one less thing to do. Cut down on render time as well! The alley way the animation is set in is also coming along well. I’m just testing out some textures, no where near finalized!

C&C is always welcomed and asked of! Please!

Thanks all!

~Chase

#17

Yeah, you don’t need to do textures. I might not even worry about actual eyeballs since he’s going to be wearing shades. One possibility for the trench coat is that you could model the coat on his legs completely.

Tried drawing some examples… don’t think I did it that well :hmm: Maybe it’ll give you some ideas.

#18

Here are some free rigs for maya if you wanna get on with the animation:

-lowMan
(probably the most commonly used rig in Maya…and there’s a reason  )

- pjHogan
(really nice rig with a lot of facial control)

-MooM
(simple rig with a lot of nice controls)

…or you can have a look at the Animation Lounge “free rig” section

Merry Christmas guys and happy animating

#19

Hey all! Modeling is coming along really well. I hope to have all modeling done by Sunday! Then I can focus about 5 or 6 days to animating and a day or two to rendering, I took into account your idea about connecting the trench to his legs, I think it will work. We’ll find out during rigging! Please give me some C&C so that I can fix things if need be! Thanks!

Hmmm well what should i do? A shiney trench or a more cloth looking one? Personally I think the cloth looks a lot better and more true to the source material!

Also here is a little animation I had been working on that I just wanted to do for fun. A little fight scene, its not done, but you can see some of my animating skills.

That alley looks pretty good! But it still looks a little clean, maybe a few random debris is needed. Bottles, cans, paper, cardboard boxes. But don’t stay too concentrated on it, better to work on the animation.

About the coat, I agree the cloth looks better.

Keep posting updates
