Animating Rubiks cube

#1

Hello.

I’m playing with a new idea and have run into a challenge.
I’ve modeled a rubiks cube (not that there is much to model). I want to make a simple animation by rotating the sides on various axis. I’m able to rotate sides on Z axis, but once I begin to rotate on the X or Y, the blocks that were rotated on the Z axix begin to rotate independently, in turn that messes up the entire cube.

How can I set up the cube so that when I rotate one face of the cube the remaining sides will not have the rest of the cube deform?

Any help or suggestions will be appreciated.

Thank you.

I guess you could move the pivot point of all the cubes to the center, and then just set your rotate mode to “World”. So when you select the side’s you want to animate, Maya won’t care if the local rotation axis has changed.
