Animating material position

#1

Hello,

How would I animate a material on an object? I searched around and read something about the Morpher material but it looks kind of different from what I want.

Lets say I had a White cylinder. I would like to animate a Stripe along that cylinder, the stripe not necessarily being a texture but another material with specular settings different to the ones on the cylinder…

Hope I’m explaining myself.

Any ideas? :bounce:

Animate the object’s UV coordinates.
In 3ds Max(it’s always a good idea to name the used software btw) you could use an UVW Xform modifier for that.

Sorry yeah I meant 3ds max, i’ll look into what you said… thanks!

cant find any instructions on how to use the modifier…any idea where to start?

Apparently it isnt as simple as applying the material to an object and then the modifier to move it

The manual is always good for starting.

Apparently you hte only one who knows all the facts and details, so you are welcome to share them.

I always check the manual first but it didn’t make it clear, there’s little info. If the manual was all we needed to become experts then we wouldn’t need forums like this would we?

I don’t get what you mean by this? I was basing that on what I read on the manual and then tried experimenting with no success.

Thanks

On your cylinder(from #1) one would animate the value of either U, v or w to achieve a movement of the mapping coordinates but the coordinates only , not the content of the actual map or material.

It’s quite impossible to know what you have tried so far or what exactly you try to achieve, so be more precise about what exactly you dealing with and you wnt to achieve.

Oh ok I get you, so…exactly what I want. I have a cylinder with X material, lets say metallic paint, and I want another material lets say lets say glass, and animate it along the metallic cylinder.

thanks!

You could use a belnd material with one material slot for metal and the other for glas. In the Mix slot you apply a mask which kann be either a bitmap or any other map. The mix maps’ coodinates can be animated by either using the mapping coordinates in the material editor or a UVW xform modifier.
