animating HumanIK

#1

I’ve only recently started using Maya 2012 and I’m considering using the humanIK rig for a character. There’s not going to be any mocap. it’s all going to be animated by hand. It’s for a tv series so there’s going to be quite alot of shots that are going to be animated.

Do you guys have any experience of doing stuff like this with humanIK? is it worth it, or is it still better to do all the rigging by hand?

Also, I’ve noticed that the controls do not have zero transforms in the stance pose, and you can’t type any transform values in the channel box either… this is unbelievably impractical when animating. does anyone have a decent workaround for this?

As my testing proceeds, I’ve also noticed that you don’t seem to be able to copy and paste keys from one control to another in the timeline. :surprised
If I try to do it in the graph editor, maya crashes instantly.

Also, I’ve discovered that you can actually type in values in the channel box sometimes… I’m just not sure what makes is possible yet… But if I type in a translate y of “10” for example, maya will conveniently round the number up to 9.998.

I’m guessing that this humanIK deal isn’t really for animation, but maybe it works well for retargeting mocap.
Too bad. it would’ve been awesome to have the same type of rig but useful for pure animation.

EDIT: It could ofc also be that I’m just not aware of the proper workflow when animating a humanIK rig. if that is the case, then please enlighten me.
