animated UV distortion

Is it possible to put an animated deformer (blendshape, lattice, etc.) on the UV layout? I haven’t been able to find a controlled method for doing this.

I have a character with a single tiling texture animated in one axis. My goal is to warp the UV layout so that I can change the speed of the motion on the different parts of the body over time. Ideally I’d like to have multiple sets of UVs that could blend from one shape to another, just like a blendshape.

Maybe there is another way to do this?
