Animated Normal Maps???

#1

I am trying to create a set of animated normal maps for a game, and I am hitting a very hard brick wall here.

The effects are mostly water related (waves, ripples, etc). Hours of googling have returned nothing.

Does anyone have a workflow for creating these textures? My tests always gave me UV seams at the edges of the tile after baking (as in any baked tangent space normal map).

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I am totally in the dark…and my client is looking at me funny :argh:

if its for a game i would animate the uvs…

sadly, I need the actual waves changing over time, not just moving along, otherwise animating the uvs would be perfect

If it is for waves, I know realflow can output animated displacements (possibly normals) from its realwave surface. I had to tile and loop them, so there was a little bit of work, but it got the job done.

If it does not output normal maps, you could always export the displacement sequence and render normals of that out of max. Should work like a charm, plus RealFlow has many many options for some good waves on it realwave surface.
