WIP of my matte painting I am working on. Feedback is appreciated.
Ancient Temple -WIP
i can imagine this painting can be well turn into a dramatic fantasy looking matte painting
Hi, just to be clear here, the bottom image is your Plate right? (aka reference image) and the top one is your WIP… is thats the case then keep on going, nothign much happening right now to really see anything yet.
Well after a lot of downtime I figured I would upload the final version of this. Let me know what you all think.
Still having trouble with light bleed. Critiques appreciated.

Hey Sam,
Good work! Here’s some suggestions:
The three-tone area just to the left of the pillar is not working, for several reasons. The dark bar that defines the lower edge of the cave opening is dofficult to read. I’m not sure exactly what it is. There is no form to it. Also, it appears to be casting a shadow on the floor below. This is inconsistent with the lighting in the rest of the image. Notice how things are lit by a soft, and low light source. This shadow should be much softer, and deeper into the cave.
Regarding the light spill, you almost have it right. Remeber light spill is a lens effect. What you should be seeing is a mostly uniform, glowing area directly around the bright portions of the image. I would say, take out the glowy edge at the top of the cave opening, and tone down that triangular area next to it.
Also, what’s going on outside the cave?
Can always count on good critique from you Jared. Thank you for catching that shadow, now that you say that it looks completely wrong(wish I would have caught that before I turned it in eh?). I was never sure exactly what to do with that, what it was meant to be was a wall, just not exactly what to put there… I guess I will find a texture and shape it some more.
Thank you for the light spill info, that effect has, and probably always will be, a wonderful and magical thing to me(lol).
Outside the cave… Um… lets see, not much really. Heh. From talking to the teacher, he said the light coming into the cave,(based on the scale of the image and the amount of time it would take to even expose something like this to get that much contrast) would be so washed out and blown out that I could put just about anything in there. Honestly, in my own opinion, I agree with him. The part where the matte painting is “taken” from is so dark that looking out of the cave would be like walking into the sun after an all nighter at monty. But, hey, thats just my opinion.
I will revise some and post a new version in a few days or so.
Please more critiques.
