Ancient Desert City

This is a freelance painting I’m working on and would really like cirques on how I can improve the image. original size is 3860x2180

I start in maya by modeling the buildings and laying out the city, I them rendered out several passes ( AO, FG, depth, spec and shadow). Then everything was comped in photoshop and heavy painted over.

Look forward to C&C

Excellent image Ryan, I’ve said it before but I am still very impressed with your painting skills. I’m curious if it took a very long time to complete the piece?

In terms of crit I really can’t see anything that I would comment on artistically or technically. If this is a standalone image that isnt having effects of any sort composited in later, then the one thing I notice is a lack of signs of life. So perhaps hints of tiny lights in windows indicating fires or lamps, or some kind of glow or lighter shade within some of the very black windows to show the rooms and corridors within do have light sources somewhere. Its honestly very hard to crit since the image works so well already.

Looks EPIC!!!
I agree that there needs some implied life or death.
And I my have the godrays leave a bit of a shadow shaft behind the closest tower. Make that interaction more complete.

Maybe some light foreground debris in the air around the border of the composition?

Overall nice image man.

The only prob I have is that it looks a bit messy in areas. Some textures are overlayed on top of each other and some strokes are more noticeable than others. I would clean it up a bit, starting from top to bottom or left to right. I like to create a black solid on the top layer to hide a side of the painting to allow me to focus on areas and clean them up. It has a concept art feel more then a production ready matte painting.

Yes, awesome work you made.
My only crit would be i dont have a real feeling of depth.
It is something with the clouds in the middle area i guess, i cant figure it out exactly.

But besides that, great work
