Did these heads in pencil. I was planning on finishing them in PS but Im busy with the hummingbirds when I’m not at work. Oh well.

So much to do so little time. Been gone a couple days. All these social engagements and staying out late are not friendly on posting often. Anyway, here are some of tonights FS sketches. Three five minute and two ten minute I beleive. I left a bit early to meet up with friends, but I got a bit of time in. I cleaned up the background a bit in PS tonight when I got home. I felt pretty good about the session.

Hi xiannc, just surfing here and found your thread.
Your work is great and your sketches are very cool…
Ciao
Hey Xiannc
Nice studies!Your life drawings make me wanting to start a class too…
Keep it up!
Thank you very much ytresu!
Polonoid, I definitely recommend it, I checked out your stuff and I would love to see what you would do from a figure study session. Go find one quick!
So for this post I have another head study and I have another first. My first two hour pose from a private session tonight. The model is Maya again, she has been very great to work with. We will probably have two more sessions with her in the next two weeks and then she will be moving away so we will have to find someone else. I messed up on Maya’s face, just so you know she doesn’t look like that.
I haven’t posted more to my WIP thread yet, because I haven’t got to any milestone yet. I will post there tonight or tommorow when I get done with the girl in grayscale.

I haven’t been taking a break from art, I promise. I just haven’t been posting. Ive still been working on hummingbird girl. I post there again sometime next week. I just finished a picture in pencil from a photograph that I was “comissioned” by my aunt to do for their wedding. I will post that next week after it is given to them. So what am I posting tonight you may ask? I will be posting a good two hour head study and a bad two hour figure drawing. Critiques and overpaints on the figure drawing would be very helpful. Thank you.

I have so much going on right now! Job, family, friends etc… Thats a good thing, but I’m not drawing as much as I should be!
I seriously need to buckle down and start taking the sketch pad with me everywhere. Any advice guys? Here is the latest figure drawing. I am enjoying these two-hour long poses I am learning more about proportions, but at the end of a session mostly I feel like I need several more hours to get it right. Until next time. Critiques please!

Another month passes by. It’s been another eventful one, but I have decided and am working toward something. I will be applying to the ARA in Toronto. Thats a cold place for this southern boy, but I have been looking at atelier programs for almost a year now and of all of them ARA seems to teach the level of realism I want to be able to acheive. For me a year commited to drawing well would be good anywhere, but especially at a great school like that. I must have focused time!
I hope to start in the fall of 2008 if I get accepted and can save up enough.
So tonight Ive got another figure drawing but Ive also got a quick sketch of a crow that I was happy to have done in 10 minutes before I went to bed. Ive got Bridgmans that I will begin making copies of this week! I need to post more in this forum. There is so much great stuff being posted by everyone, I need to tell you so. Expect to hear from me. Goodnight for now.

p.s. I think that charcoal is starting to do what I tell it to.
I still had a couple corrections that I made once I got it scanned in.
Christian,
Congrats! That will be really exciting to follow your atelier progress. I look forward to seeing your journey! I really hope you will post your work as you go along in your program.
Cheers,
-Rebeccak
Thanks Rebecca! I will definitely keep you posted. Ive asked for the ARA figure drawing dvd for Christmas. I would love to go ahead and get started with their technique. Has anybody seen it yet? Reccomended?
As I’ve said before… The first fridays of the month here in Raleigh are awesome. All the galleries are open late, have bands and serve free wine/beer and snacks. But yesterday was a special treat. Before I picked up my girlfriend and her sister for the night’s activities I went to the closing reception/awards for the tristate portrait artist competition that was put on by The Portrait Society of America. There are some awesome artists around here I didn’t know about and I got to talk to quite a few of them about starting out as an artist and they were all so helpful. I also went to a talk put on by three girls who had a group exhibit at artspace. They were all young and had some very interesting things to say about what their art meant to them and what processes they used to get the final product. Awesome night. Then this morning I got to wake up for a long pose. Lucky lucky. I didn’t do too well, I went to the wrist action for the small details too quickly. I should have kept it loose longer to get more of a gesture to start out with. Anyway, it is what it is and I’m learning. I just realized this is the model that was in my first post here from back in June. I know I’m getting better, but I still have soooo much to learn!! :eek:Yikes! So please critique on any little thing if you will. Take care.

Hi xiannc
just went through your thread and I really enjoyed it.
It’s great to see that you are working towards a goal such as the ARA you mentioned. Your drawings from life look wonderful and I really like your pen studies as well.
I know how frustrating it can be sometimes not being able to draw due to having no time… and when there is time, feeling so bloody tired it’s really costing a lot of extra effort just to get started, and staying focussed once at it.
One thing that helped me is to plan drawing time in my daily schedule and sticking to it (=looking forward to it
)
Bobby Chiu made this clear to me in his videos on his video sketchbook thread. if you haven’t seen those, I really really recommend them
TUTORIALS - Digital Painting Video Sketchbook - by Bobby Chiu
best to start with the oldest vid first…
Looking forward to see more drawings soon!
A couple more from me from this past week. A couple bridgeman copies and another 2 hour figure drawing. This one has alot of parts I like and yet don’t like at the same time. Maybe an overpaint could be helpful if someone has the time. Cheers

I have just upgraded from 1ghz to 3! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
I’m so excited. I was taxing my old computer to the limit with Photoshop. Now I can run big images no problem.
I’ve got a 2hr figure drawing to post as soon as I get my scanner connected to the new system. But for now my first post to OFDW 20.

Worked on the face, hair, feet/ground, and overall skin a bit today. Leighton is awesome.

the last one there was an attempt at brushing on charcoal beforehand. It turned out way too dark and I was rather upset by the leangth of her arm.
oh well, live and learn.
I thought these figure drawings needed there own post for two reasons.
Cheers!
