Christian,
Nice ballpoint study, I was admiring this on the Workshop thread.
You’ve established a nice sense of volume without being overly stuffy about it ~ looking forward to seeing more!
Cheers,

I had fun with this one, and I think the proportions are closer to the picture than the previous one, but I still like my first ballpoint better. I’m pretty sure this one took longer too.
Rebeccak: Do you have an example of an “overly stuffy” ballpoint study? I haven’t seen enough of them to know which ones are stuffier. Is this an example?..

Tonight the instructor talked about line quality. He talked about parts on the drawing that don’t need a line at all. The model was a very well built man. Because of that I was worried about my drawings being too much like the muscle man symbols in my head. I think it worked out ok though.

Now that photobucket doesn’t allow nudity, does anyone know a good place to host images. If anyone has an ftp site they have some free space on, that would be cool too.
hi there,
totally love the drawings in this post…

[left]Thank you very much Mu! That first one is my favorite so far in that class. I really appreciate the compliment.

[left] Christian,
Really liking this one especially:

[left]The strokes radiating in the background are a nice contrast to the more subtle strokes of the interior. Nice job with making the front of the face the focus and not the sides.

Thanks Rebeccak. The background was done in the last 30 minutes of my workday. I knew I wasn’t going to get finished, so I just went for the thing that would make the biggest effect in the least time.
These three I did a little different. I think the proportions are closer to true because I started with a pencil blocking things out. Then I went to pen. Still not perfect, but I think that helped.

Tonight was the last night of my anatomy and figure drawing class. But a really great thing happened. The model was the same one from class #3. She did a couple quick poses, I did some gesture drawings. Then the instructor said now for a good 30-40 minute pose. The model got in a reclining pose and I started drawing. From the start I was not satisfied. My drawing was waaay to small and I just wasn’t comfortable. I was drawing more from my head studies experience of the past week. Where I am working really detailed with a ballpoint pen, After about 10 minutes the instructor came around and said thats a good drawing but you can’t go any further with what you have.

He told me to start over and do just a torso drawing big on the whole paper. So I made this one which I love.:buttrock: It was a great ending to the class.

Thanks alot se7en. That is probably one of my favorites from this class.
So now that the class is over I will still have figure drawing every other week or so, but Im planning with a couple other people to start a private long pose group which would be great.
There is also a group which I might try out tommorow in a neighboring city. Plenty of options around here.

Christian,
I’m thrilled to hear that your class ended on such a high note!
I know how emotional drawing can be, and sometimes bad drawings can ruin your day ~ but it’s great to see how you really pulled this last piece off beautifully, congratulations!
Really enjoying your pen sketches, have you also seen the work of BNN lately? Some really nice stuff going on on his thread as well.
Cheers,
~Rebeccak
Thanks for the compliment rebeccak and thanks for pointing me to BNN’s thread, I definitely dug his stuff. Hey! Can we do hands or feet for the next anatomy series? I could really use either one.
Tonight was another figure drawing session with the same model as last post. I arrived a little late, did one 5 minute, two 10 minute, and two 25 minute sketches. I’m posting two 10s in charcoal and two 25s in graphite. The 25’s were done on some wonderful material that a friend of mine brought for me as a gift tonight. It’s paper made out of mylar. Does anyone know about this? I thought it worked very well. I was pleased. As always c+c’s or paintovers are welcome. I’m sure I don’t see all the mistakes.

A couple of the people I have been taking the class with and I are planning on doing a private long pose in a few weeks with this same model. Any suggestions on how to pace for a two hour pose? i.e. envelope time, outline time etc…
I will post more head studies later on.
I loved that anatomy series. Great job on putting it together rebeccak. I can’t wait til the next one. Maybe I will get more done next time. Here are my last two heads that I did at work the other day.

Yo Christian~
Pretty nice studies going along!
Anyway you can try to be bolder with your pen studies, go with more daring strokes and lay down the tonal values. I think it’s kinda awkward for a start but as you continue you will love the dynamism this little pen can create!
=D
Christian,
Glad to hear it! You did a great job in the Workshop and I am hoping to do more, but the next one will likely not be until after my CGWorkshop concludes as I just don’t have the energy to run the two concurrently ~ there will however be an OFDW running during that time.
I think the pen studies are fantastic and I hope to see more of your progression with this medium. Charcoal is great for expressive effects, but when you really want to knuckle down and understand details, there’s no better medium than ballpoint pen.
Cheers,
~Rebeccak
Oh, I really like this one!
Its has such a calm feeling in it… the lighting and the soft shades helps a lot
very nice ^^
I wish I could work with real models too. Must be awesome!
Hey guys,
BNN and Rebeccak, thank you for the tips. I am trying to be more bold in my pen studies, hopefully it will show in this next one.
Sulamoon: Thank you very much. Are there not any figure study sessions in Sao Paulo?
The ballpoint has grown on me since I have started using it. I didn’t realize how much it could do. I have decided to continue with the head studies until the next thing comes up since they are an easy thing to keep going while I am at work.

But I have also started something else… I have commited myself to a full digital painting. I was browsing around on myspace the other day and found a picture by a friend of a friend.

I started sketching it out and I ended up copying the whole picture. As I was copying the picture I got all these ideas for making a painting so I threw some of them in there as a rough sketch.

I ended up emailing the girl in the picture to ask her permission to do the painting. She emailed me back with a beautiful story.
“In Feb 2003, I met and fell in love with a man whose ceiling was blanketed by paper cranes. Some of them even had notes or special drawings - reminders of the days that he made them. I spent many of those nights staring up at those cranes, and it is the one thing that I will remember about our first house. He took this picture very shortly after I moved in with him, on the first night that we got all fixed up together and went to a party. I was madly in love, and feel like you can see it in this picture.”
So Ive spent most of this week thinking about this picture and getting references and now that I have her permission and her story, I want to try to put the story back into the picture. You might see that as the peice moves along. I think I’m done with the layout, and it looks something like this…

This painting will probably take a long time as it’s my first. Sorry for the long post I’m excited about getting started. I know it’s to early to critique, but if you have some tips on getting started with a full concept I would apreciate it. I will be moving this peice over to 2d/wip area, to get some more ideas from them.
